* Allen led Blue Valley to a 12-1 record and the Class 5A title, a 35-14 victory over Bishop Carroll.

* Blue Valley had a standout defense, but Allen was the clear leader. He played three games with a painful quadricep injury, but still made a difference on the field.

* He had 161 total tackles, including 95 solo tackles. He had four sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles. For his career, he finished with 298 tackles, seven tackles for loss, six sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Coach Eric Driskell: "He's a combination of everything _ speed, athleticism and he's unbelievably physical. I just mean, he wasn't going to go around blocks, he runs through people and through tackles. He demoralizes offenses because he plays so physical. That physical nature can get in the heads of offenses."

Allen demonstrates good toughness and range when playing against the run. Has the height with enough athleticism for the outside linebacker position at the major level of competition; his frame should be able to support additional bulk. Does a good job with special teams assignments; can cover kickoffs showing steady speed; has a blocked field goal to his credit and his open field tackling skills should prove beneficial. Appears to have some hip tightness however his balance and agility allow him to play in space effectively. Does a good job with K&D run recognition skills; lacks some playing strength when taking on linemen but does a good job playing downhill and filling off the edge. We like his ability to quickly move through traffic in pursuit of the football. This is an active, intense player that can never be counted out of a play. Although not an accomplished zone coverage defender at this stage of his career we see promising potential; flashes the ability to crossover with good route recognition with eyes on the QB. Man coverage assignments will need careful evaluation. This a tough guy capable of causing havoc in the backfield. Although Allen is presently flying under the radar as a BCS prospect we feel his production and intensity warrant continued evaluation.

Starling, Allen headline Kansas large school all-state football

Gardner-Edgerton quarterback Bubba Starling and Blue Valley linebacker Ian Allen earned Most Valuable Player honors on the 2010-11 Kansas Large School All-State Football team thanks in large part to the success of their football teams, as well as their individual play on the gridiron.

Photo by Tom LemmingGardner-Edgerton's Bubba Starling..Starling ended his storied career with a loss to Allen's Tiger football team, but chewed up huge chunks of rushing yards beforehand. Starling, who will be participating in Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, led the Sunflower State with more than 2,400 rushing yards on 172 carries and scored 31 touchdowns running the ball. The Gatorade Player of the Year also threw for 812 yards and eight more touchdowns.

The Trailblazers were the state's top-ranked team for much of the year until Blue Valley avenged a 42-21 regular season loss with a 45-42 Class 5A semifinal win over Starling and the Trailblazers. Allen and the Tigers then went on to upend Wichita Bishop Carroll 35-14 in the title game.

Allen finished his senior season with 148 total tackles, including 87 solo stops. The 6-foot-3-inch, 205-pound linebacker also chalked up five tackles for losses, three sacks, two quarterback hurries, three pass breakups, an interception and recovered a fumble.

Elite 11 in state of kansas

Worth noting

Was named Eastern Kansas League defensive MVP. ... Had 12 tackles, including seven solo stops and a sack, in 35-14 win over Carroll in 5A state title game. ... Two-time All-EKL first-team selection. ... Is finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best lineman/linebacker in the Kansas City metro area. ... Getting looks from several FCS schools.

Coach's comment

"A lot of guys are fast, but the speed in which he plays is unbelievably impressive," Blue Valley coach Eric Driskell said. "He's just plays at such a high speed and plays with a great motor, and he's so physical when he gets to the tackle. Our defense has played well all year and he's the heart and soul of that defense."

I was just thinking about that today bent...he looks like the most impressive out of highschool but I think conrad nicholls, connor underwood, nick rice, tanner fritschle could be the earliest contributors...I think he he may be a little undersized to come in as a freshman and play at 200 lbs plus we have lots of lb's but I am def excited to see him in blue...this kid will be great.....

Yeah, not so much looking at immediate contributions, but at accomplishments by the end of his career. Several have great potential though.

ARTICLE: Collision of GREATNESS

Blue Valley's Allen, SM Northwest's Goodger lead cast of All-Sun Defensive honorees...

Led by a pair of guided missiles in All-Sun Co-Defensive players of the year Ian Allen of Blue Valley High School and Drew Goodger of Shawnee Mission Northwest, today The Sun puts on the hits.

Meet our senior-laden All-Sun Defensive first-team honorees, a senior-laden group that delivers plenty in the way of veteran leadership.

Many of our members, are capable, too, of producing the loudest talk of all on the gridiron - a hit that can be heard blocks, maybe zip codes away.

You know, the sort of ESPN-worthy collision that could make even a backfiring vehicle someplace wince.

The biographical information that appears along with each honoree has been provided by his coach.

Our full defensive team appears in the color graphic atop Page 8A.

LINEBACKERS

Ian Allen

Blue Valley

This productive-and-then-some Tigers senior and Indiana State commitment amassed 161 total tackles for the Class 5A state champs.

Allen, the All-Sun Co-Defensive Player of the Year, indeed keyed the defensive assault throughout the Tigers' run to glory under first-year head coach and All-Sun Coach of the Year Eric Driskell.

The 6-3, 205-pound senior rung up five tackles for a loss, two quarterback hurries, four sacks, three tipped passes and one intercepted pass.

He forced a pair of fumbles, recovering one, and exits the Blue Valley scene with 298 career total tackles.

A first-team all-state performer in 5A circles, Allen earned first-team All-East Kansas League status as well.

"Ian was a captain on our team," Driskell said. "He is an explosive player that plays with great passion. He makes everyone around him step up their game."

HITTER: All-Sun Co-Defensive Player of the Year Ian Allen, a Blue Valley senior linebacker, sets a tone defensively for the Class 5A state-champion Tigers, who finish the season with a 12-1 mark.
