So we're officially keeping the Quincy game on the schedule? I was just looking and realized we're playing 12-games, which I don't think we've done in several years now. I thought when we added Tennessee Tech that meant Quincy was coming off this year. The advantage could be that it provides a bounce back/tune up if we play poorly at Purdue and Indiana. It also gives us one more home game where we'd only have four if we didn't play them. It also helps us avoid two consecutive bye weeks.

I don't like going on the road to Tenn Tech for an 8 p.m. start, but we probably do need that game to have a shot at the playoffs. That time seems like more of a challenge, but I really know little about what kind of team they should have this year.

Also, we have no bye week during the conference schedule. Guess these are all things I should have observed before.

With everyone playing an extra game this year it likely means teams will need 8 D1 wins to make the playoffs. Not sure that leaves much room for error.

Thanks to stupid scheduling, it will take a miracle for us to make the playoffs. Figuring we lose the first two games (yeah, we could win, but let's be realistic, that doesn't happen too often), and Quincy doesn't count, that leaves us with one potential win in the non-con. We would have to go 7-1 in the MVFC to reach the eight win plateau, or 6-2 if we only need seven. We've never won 6 MVFC games in a season, and going 7-1 would most likely make us the league champion. Either way, I don't see it happening. New coaching staff (who will be very, very good, I believe), lots of new players, some misses by the previous staff on several kids - this doesn't shape up as a 9-3 season. Doesn't mean it can't happen, just that it probably won't.

Stupid, pathetic scheduling. Beyond words dumb...

Believe the win vs Quincy does count now.

If it doesn't count we should abandon the contest. Quincy is to the football Trees what our hoops Trees are to the "high majors"--only bad can come from the game. If we win by 50 it nothing to get excited about. If we lose by 1 it is total disaster.

Stat and confidence builder that's about all it's good for, that and a chance to get some young guys on the field who aren't redshirts.

I understand and agree with what you are saying. At the same time I can't help but remember August 27, 2009 when Quincy put a 26-20 Memorial Stadium loss on us. I know, different time, different kids, different coaches. I also know everyone of the Quincy kids thinks they can do it again. In the unlikely event that we are leading the B1G with a 2-0 record going in to week 3 Quincy is the perfect trap game for us. Don't take me wrong. I don't think they will beat us; I don't think it will be close. But if it is a loss or even close we could be in for a long year.

Still, playing Quincy and TWO Big 10 teams in the same year was moronic...

If it counts it's genius. You're going to be 0-2, most likely, so you get an easy game that COUNTS at home. It's exactly what you should do.

Also, on SP's note, if we somehow beat IU and PU, we're going to be plenty good enough to beat Quincy. A trap game would be against a team like Drake last year.

For those worried about a let down against Quincy, don't just remember the loss four years ago, remember we beat them 44-0 last year, could have been worse if we wanted to run up the score, and 56-22 in 2010-2011.

But it counts for less than a FCS win. If we are on the playoff bubble, which I would consider a successful first season for Coach Sanford, that game will not help us in the least. It will most likely keep us out of the playoffs.

I think it's better than having three weeks off and then going to Tenn. Tech, especially if at least counts for something. It's not going to count against us. If we're even with another team, that win either counts, or counts for less, but it doesn't count against us, so I don't see how it keeps out of the playoffs. As I said, it's also one more home game in a year where we'd only have the four MVC games at home otherwise and that to me would be worse than playing a second tier school. If you want to maintain fan interest, you have to give them more home games to come watch.

I don't know that this is 100% correct but what I was told this morning is that it will count for .25 win home wins are worth .75 and road wins worth 1.25 similar to the RPI in college basketball.

You are assuming that Quincy is the only school on Earth that we could have filled that spot with. I agree that leaving that week open would be a mistake, but surely there is another FCS school that we could have gotten who is a level below us. Go looking at the bottom rung of the OVC. At least they're FCS, and would count as much as any other game. This game just further hamstrings us as far as playoff consideration.

Let's say we're sitting at 7-5 and we're on the playoff bubble thanks to us spanking NDSU in Terre Haute. Another team is also 7-5 and on the bubble with a top 5 win. They have seven wins against D-I foes, even though one of those is against a pretty bad team. We have 6 wins against D-I foes and a win against Quincy. Chances are, they're in and we're out because we have fewer wins against D-I opponents. In that case, scheduling Quincy instead of, say, the bottom OVC team, killed us. Now, if we would happen to beat either IU or Purdue, Quincy doesn't hurt us, but that scenario is very unlikely to happen.

The good thing in all this is that this schedule wasn't the doing of the new regime. Sanford has made clear his desire to schedule more home and home deals with FCS teams. That's a great step. I betcha we see EIU back on the schedule, and the possibilities for other quality series are great as well.

But this year's schedule stinks if we ever had playoff aspirations.

Partial credit is better than no credit, hopefully Quincy is gone for good after this year.

I have to think whatever deal we had with them has to expire now. This is the fourth game in five years. If we're going to play a DII or NAIA school year year let's play Rose Hulman so at least there is a local rivalry element to it or something.
