'12 WI F Matt Van Scyoc (Transfer from Citadel)

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

Since Matt appealed their decision, it's pretty safe to assume that it was not a type of offense that would raise serious issues in Terre Haute. If he had cheated on an exam, assaulted a girl or a stolen something, it likely would had not been appealed. So I say we welcome him, know that coach is aware of his discrepancy and felt comfortable in adding him to our roster. Lesson learned and we all move on. Citadel entry requirements are rigid so I am guessing he'll be great academically as well. Welcome to State, Matt.

Agreed. You can get kicked out of some of these religious/military schools for doing very small (in my eyes) things.

I know he has two...was saying that regardless of his position furthering a, "log jam, " it's better to have established skill at any position for three yrs as opposed to two.

Spot on --- it could be something as small as not being forthcoming on another cadet's honor code violation.

The Cadet Honor Code, described within the Cadet Honor Manual (2013-2014), belongs to the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and is administered by cadets. It is each cadet's duty upon enrollment to be familiar with the honor system as set forth in this Honor Manual and to abide by the Honor Code. "Simply stated, the Code demands that a cadet does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do."

That being said; virtually every school that has a Honor Code such as this also has a group of "jail house lawyers" who are looking for loopholes.

I for one, don't care what he did / didn't do at the Citadel; that's between him and that institution.

Welcome to Terre Haute Matt! Looking forward to your skills on the court!

We don't currently have a log jam of players averaging 14 and 5 a game, so I'm not really worried about where he fits. We're not really in a position where we can be too picky. If he's good, he'll find playing time and a position. I'd rather have a 6'7" PF who contributes than a 6'10" PF/C who doesn't do anything but fill out a uniform.

That's not a statement made towards any current player, by the way. Offensive and defensive strategies are moving away from the standard "1-5" positions and becoming more about individual skills sets and how they mesh.

Hearing some rumblings that they may be looking into whether he can be eligible immediately since he was dismissed at the Citadel. I believe I'll see Coach Lansing at the AAU event this week so if I do, I'll ask.

Uh, that would be pretty cool.

That would be pretty sweet. He sounds like a real player. Doubt it happens but it could be a big break for us if it did. NCAA is known to do crazier things!

If he couldn't play where he was, seems like he should be able to play right away.

Agreed; this seems like a no-brainer, but I suppose I'm biased. He didn't transfer from The Citadel in the classic sense, he was forced to transfer because he lost his scholarship. Why penalize the kid even more by making him sit out a year?

I haven't heard the reason why he was dismissed, but I believe if it were for something egregious we would know by now. The Citadel Honor Code is an interesting read, if you have some free time. There are only four reasons one can be dismissed per the Honor Code: Lying, Cheating, Stealing and/or Toleration (failure to report a case of lying, cheating, or stealing). It could be something as simple as he knowingly protected a teammate by not reporting a case of someone cheating on a test. Who knows?

Let the kid play and move on.

Great article on Van Scyoc. Sets the stage for the "anticipation bug" for me again for sure. Still hoping for a good Valley finish for us this year...GO SYCAMORES!

That was one of the more poorly written articles I've seen from Todd. Mutliple uses of wrong words and when talking about our returning frontcourt next year he doesn't mention Bell.

Other than that I love this kids mental approach to the game.. Looking forward to seeing him play for us.

The more you hear/read about the young man, the more you like him....

I'm really encouraged by Lansing's comments. Last year at this time he was much more pessimistic about our chances. He's now saying he thinks we are as deep as talented a team as he's had during his ISU tenure. Lansing is one usually for coach-speak, so I take that as a very good sign. Van Scyoc is going to be an important piece to the success, too. I hope he's as good as advertised because we need some decent production out of our frontcourt.
