Didn’t know where to post this but didn’t want to create a new thread for it but thought it was interesting to look at. Data used is from 22/23 season.

There must be some sort of buyout with Lottich that inflated Valpo's budget. If there was a $750k-$800k buyout, then Valpo's budget would be 3.2 instead of 4.0

The other 10 generally went in the usual order for MBB expenses.

Damn, we should be recognized nationally for doing the most with one of the lowest budgets. Sure wish we could bump up that budget about 1-2 million dollars or so. But, we won't/ can't and that is why any success we have here is short lived.

I would like to see the budget of last season and this year and see how much it has increased.

It really is impressive what we have done with one of the lowest if the not the lowest budgets in this conference. Say what you want about Greg Lansing but he did punch above his weight class as far as budget is concerned about 90% of the time. Just goes to show what could be at Indiana State for basketball if we put the resources there. We are doing more with less. I would love to see what it looks like fully funded. Here are all of our Kenpom Rankings from the Lansing and Schertz eras. During that time we have had a budget ranked near 200 in college bball and one of it not lowest in the MVC.

38 17-3 1st in conference
100 13-7 5th in conference
230 4-14 Schertz first year (Key out with injury)
119 11-7 in conference
122 11-7 in conference
208 7-11 in conference
138 8-10 in conference
199 5-13 in conference - Low spot in Lansing era
168 8-10 in conference
169 11-7 in conference
108 12-6 in conference - Damn good team, just had a generational Wichita State program at their peak
92 9-9 in conference
137 8-10 in conference
108 12-6 in conference - Won conference tournament

Average Kenpom = 138
Conference win loss = 136-120

So after 14 seasons and 2 coaches (with totally different philosophies) we have had 3 seasons that I would consider bad; Schertz first year when Key was out for the season and 2 seasons in the middle of Lansings tenure. But those "Bad" seasons are essentially what we are paying for. We are paying for a 200 ranked team and bottom 1-3 finish in the conference. We've managed to avoid that 85% of the time which should show you what could be.

If anyone needs their college basketball fix now Dayton and Xavier are playing exhibition on ESPN+ and yes Conwell is playing.

Interesting to see the ACC and SEC commit to the NIT like this - especially with that FOX tournament starting. Guess that means it'll stick around for a while.

*Most* years the Valley champ should be set for an auto bid here, if they fall apart in St. Louis, so I guess that's nice again

The new rules would have put High Point in last year's field. They were the team that got screwed by the new rules not locking in all regular season champs that weren't NCAA bound.

If the Valley regular season champion is ever ranked lower than #125 I'd have a hard time arguing they deserve to be in the NIT.

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing but the Valley is set up pretty nicely with the current NIT format. Bradley got in last year and hosted a first round game and while they were a good team they were a 3rd place Valley team that didn't make it to Sunday and weren't really ever in the conference title race finishing 13-7. Flash back to a 2014 ISU squad that finished 2nd in the Valley (12-6) to a generationally talented Wichita team, got to Sunday and had a competitive games 2 of the 3 match-ups with them. We had to go on the road to Iowa. As we have found out hosting is a HUGE advantage and Valley schools are in a way better position to do that 2024 than they were in 2004 despite the NCAA being nearly impossible to attain.

Maybe but won't this new batch of "rules," lead to more and more smaller schools being shoved aside... and the richer schools keep collecting more $$?

It's more screwed up than the IHSAA's rules that virtually guarantee an Indy-metro or Central Indiana-based HS will ALWAYS host the majority of Regional and beyond events.

W/L, conf finish should ALWAYS be more 'important' than the latest (*ucked) computer algorithm to pick tourney teams...

I think the FOX Tournament is primarily for Big 10, Big 12, and Big East schools, as those leagues all have big TV contracts with FOX. The SEC and ACC are Disney properties (ESPN/ABC), and ESPN is the network that shows the NIT games.

Opening night on Nov 4th for a lot of teams. Would like to see the Baylor @ Gonzaga game but it won’t tip-off until around 11pm. No way I’m making that on a Monday night.
