CHEROKEE, N.C. –Indiana State put together a strong offensive opening half Sunday afternoon at the Cherokee Invitational, but second-half struggles loomed large in a 115-66 defeat to No. 24/23 Michigan State inside Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort.

Jayci Allen led the Blue and White with 13 points off the bench, while Kennedy Claybrooks also finished in double-figures with 10. Allen went 3-for-6 from deep, while Kayla Smith and Claybrooks each knocked down a pair of threes.

Indiana State overcame a slow start to outscore Michigan State 28-25 in the second quarter. Claybrooks and Smith combined for 15 points in the second, with Amerie Flowers scoring all of her nine points in the opening 20 minutes as the Trees pulled within 59-43 at the break. Things quickly went downhill after that, as Michigan State outscored Indiana State 56-23 in the final 20 minutes to pull away in convincing fashion.

News and Notes
  • Tierney Kelsey entered Sunday ranked third in the MVC in scoring, but was held to a season-low six points. Kelsey failed to score in double-figures for the first time this season.
  • Despite the struggles in the second half, Indiana State's 66 points were the second-most by a Michigan State opponent this season.
    • Indiana State's 28-point second quarter was the highest-scoring quarter for a Michigan State opponent this season.
  • Free throws had been a struggle for the Sycamores this season, but Indiana State went 23-for-29 (79.3 percent) from the charity stripe Sunday.
  • Indiana State's 30 rebounds were a season low and its minus-14 rebound margin was its worst of the season.
  • Nala Abraham made her season debut in Sunday's game, finishing with one point in two minutes of action.
  • Michigan State's 115 points were the most for a Sycamore opponent since the 1996-97 season opener at Old Dominion (126).

Up tonight, Old Dominion

Old Dominion fell behind, fought back its deficit to 10 by the end of the third, but ultimately dropped the first match of the Cherokee Invitational, 86-57 against #14 Ole Miss on Sunday night at Harrah’s Cherokee Center.

ODU is 7-5 on the season.

That's a nice casino....out in the middle of nowhere but I enjoyed my one visit there. Wonder if coaches betting strategy is better than his coaching strategy.

ISU is hosting 6-0 in MVC Belmont tonight.

Led 27-23 after one quarter and tied at 40 at the half.

I have seen these solid first halves before, but the third quarter offense disappears.

Belmont has lost seven games on the season; however, six are against teams in the he top 40 of the net rankings.

Pulling this one out would be a confidence builder for sure.

Up next is a very good Murray State team that comes into the HC 19-3 and 10-1 in the MVC. Former Sycamore Keslyn Secrist is averaging 12.0ppg for the Racers.

After a close first quarter ending with MSU leading 24-21, the Racers truly raced away in the second quarter by hitting 6 threes to build a 20+ point halftime lead. ISU hung close until Amerie Flowers picked up a second foul. After she went to the bench for a very extended time, the Racers pulled away. Murray, a 28% 3 pt shooting team, was hitting over 50% from 3 pt land for most of the game until its deep bench entered with 8 minutes to play and a 40-point lead.

The Racers had made over 200 more FT's than their opponents, and they went 25/28 in this game.

Former Sycamore Keslyn Secrist had 19 for MSU. She was also victimized by one of the worst calls in the history of basketball. After making a 3 in the second half from in front of her coach and bench, she turned and gave them the 3 sign and a shout for which she was given a technical foul. Apparently, for excessive celebration as she certainly wasn't taunting of her own coach.

Final: Murray State 114 vs ISU 78

You know Keslyn had to enjoy tonight. I'm surprised her taunt wasn't towards Marc! The T was total BS like Dyed said earlier.

ISU trails Bradley by 4 halfway through the third period.

Every dead ball, someone with a towel cones out to just above the north FT line to fry off what appears to be a slow leak in the HC roof.

I'm late on posting about the Bradley game..lol.... There was a lot to like about moments we saw from the ladies Saturday. Yes, it was another loss but if it's true you can get some positives out of a loss this game might have been it. They showed good resilience all game. Most of the game they would fall behind by 8 or 9 points then go on a run and get back in it but just couldn't make that go ahead push all day. There were some very good drives in the paint and some very encouraging interior passing. At times the ladies played very solid defense that allowed for some fast break chances.

The ladies have 8 wins this season, double that of last season's disaster. improvement can be found right? Wrong, those wins come against teams that are a combined 21-136 and include 2 wins against an 0-27 Valpo team and 0-26 Saint Mary of The Woods. they have given up 90 or more points 7 times this season.

I never had Kelsey dropping 46 on my bingo card but damn. Ties Melanie Boeglin's record, which had stood alone for 20 years. Season over. Should be an interesting offseason.
