Going back to the 2001/2002 season, ISU has had at least a 4-game losing streak in every single season.

I believe that 10-year streak will end next season.

Good point, but sustain the winning streaks that we've also had quite a few of.

Win the Valley. Pick up a few really quality non-con wins and put us in a situation where if we don't win the MOVAL tourney it won't hurt us anyway other than seeding.

For a Valley team to make it without winning the conference tournament they'll need 25+ in the win column. It's sad, but we need to accept that the MVC is a one bid league from now on.

That is not true at all, MSU had 25 wins and a bad non-con schedule. If we win 25 games, one or two in the conference, make it to the championship, and have a very sold schedule, there is no doubt we can still make the NCAA Tournament.

Yeah we just need some nice w's out of conference. Hopefully we can get the Bulldogs back on our schedule and get 2-3 really quality ooc w's. Creighton is as good as everyone seems to tink tey are we can get 2 in...especially if the committee realizes the big least doesnt deserve 11 teams in lol

I disagree. We've got to go play the "big boys" anywhere, anytime. We've got to win some of those games. I know that's easier said than done, but if MSU had beaten Tennessee and Ok. State, they would have been dancing, too. That's why I would like to see 4 or 5 BCS schools on our schedule. The more you play them, the more chances you have of beating them.

If you win the Valley or finish second, get to the semis in St. Louis, and have a schedule that includes a couple of BCS wins and NO BAD LOSSES, there's no reason to think that an at-large cannot come your way.

Our leage also needs to abandon the Illinois State method of scheduling a whole bunch of 250+ RPI teams just to pad their win numbers. That has hurt us as much as anything. They called the old scheduling rule a "coach killer," but I wonder if Mark Turgeon or Greg McDermott or Matt Painter would agree...

"the MVC is a one bid league from now on".

You think so? I sure don't. EVERY conference has ups and downs and this was a serious DOWN year for the MVC. That said, other mid-major conferences (A-10, Colonial) have had a great year. I can remember when the A-10 had one and the Valley had three so for what it is worth, I think we will improve at some point and return to the 5-7th conference RPI we have had before. Last time I looked we were at #12. I doubt it will be next year but you never really know until mid-season. I hate to see anyone on here "give up" on the Valley because we'll be back, or at least I think we will.

How do you suggest we get 4 or 5 BCS schools on our schedule? As I said in a earlier post if it were that easy don't you think not only we but other schools would be doing it. You have to grow to that level and we are not there yet. We have no money to get anybody but Oakland City to come here, as Boda said we need butts in the seats. Be patient with continued success on the floor and improved attendance numbers we will be able to schedule opponents with higher RPI's and possibly get some to come to TH.

Exactly, we're not going to get that many power conference schools on our schedule. We can certainly try, but it's not easy, and it's not easy to beat them or win 25+ either. I appreciate the optimism here, but it's going to take an amazing run for an MVC team to make the NCAA tournament without an MVC tournament title.

Then explain the middle years of the last decade when we got 2, 3 and 4 teams in. Not all had "amazing runs." It was all about smart scheduling. When I say BCS teams, remember, that doesn't have to be UNC, Duke, Kansas, Pitt, etc. There are other teams in those leagues, that while not at the very top, would look very good on our schedule, we can probably get several of them to play us (on the road, of course), and are a lot closer to our level. A win over, say, Clemson or Boston College or Oklahoma, still looks pretty good to the committee, even though they aren't Duke or Kansas. And those types of teams can be gotten to.

And don't forget the value of early season exempt tournaments where you get the chance to play the bigs on a neutral court. We've been in those before, so why not again?

Look, I'm just saying that we need to schedule up as best we can. We have a good team coming back, and we should schedule the most rigorous non-con possible. Otherwise, you leave your fate to three games in three days in the 'Lou. If we just can't get it done, that's fine. I just hope, and know that, the coaches will try. Continually playing Oakland City will never help put butts in the seats. We should do better.

It can be done. Ask Oakland. They played 6 BCS teams this year. They'll be road games but you can play em if you want to.

And Oakland was seeded higher than us in the NCAA Tournament this season. If we have a non-con schedule like Oaklands, plus our conference opponents compared to theirs, we should definetly be in good position. We still need to win some of the big games though!! Lol.

I agree with a lot of your arguments ITF, but in recent years it has been getting harder for mid-majors to earn the at-large bids. I shouldn't say the MVC will forever be a one-bid league, but I think it's getting increasingly difficult to get an at-large in.

Very true. In my mind, that's all the more reason you go all out with scheduling the most difficult non-con opponents you can, particularly if you figure that the team you have coming back should be pretty darned good. Pull out a couple of nice wins, and you're in good shape, assuming you don't crash and burn in the MVC.

If you can't play with the big boys in November and December, you probably aren't going dancing without the tournament championship anyway. I just don't see a downside. Of course, getting them to cooperate with my basketball worldview is a whole other story...:evileye:

Like I said in another thread, I'd play the entire Big 10 every year on the road in the non-con if I could...yeah, I'm a little crazy...:krazy:

best way to get these big boys is get in one of those holiday tournamnets, not like this year where we played pan am eastern kentucky and loyala, and guess what we looseto ek and loyala. maybe we win in opening round then we have to face a big boy on neutral site theu have no choice then. It does not help whem we loose to Wyoming by 30, Ball State, Eastern Kentucky and Loyalo, those are awful loses. We got to try some 2 for ones or whatever it takes, or elese will never get any respect.

Maybe we can sneak a win at UCLA to kick off the season right!
That would be nice. Then end the non-conference with a win against Purdue!
We would be heading into the moVal in style!

UCLA vs ISU is their new arena to open their season is being discussed. working the whole Wooden connection. Suppposedly the NCAA is even thinking about making it their College Basketball tip-off game.
It's not in stone yet but being discussed.
