Auburn hired the infamous Bruce Pearl recently. This Sycamore fan now lives about an hour and fifteen minutes from Auburn and I was hoping to drive down and see a basketball game at "Football University". Needless to mention attending a football game down here would be totally out of the question. I am now told that there are less than 1,000 season tickets left and they do not expect to have any individual seats available for any SEC game. Their facility is just about the same size as the Hulman Center. Talk about surprised ???????? :shocked2:

We'll see how they feel in a few years... when the dust settles.

If a willingness to cheat isn't displayed on your resume there is no need to apply at most SEC schools, at least in football. Why not apply it to basketball, too?

He turned a football school (Tennessee) into a basketball school. He'll do the same at Auburn in short order. Great fit for him. Not saying he's clean or runs a strict program, but he's a heck of a coach and is unmatched in drumming up support for his school/community. I'd say a big majority of Tennessee fans would have loved to hire him back after his probation even after all the stuff he put their program though - he just relates to his fans so well. Again, not condoning his past but I think it's a great hire for auburn.

Pearl? turned tennessee into a MBB school? Ray Mears would likely smack you if he were still alive; shoot Don DeVoe might completely DISAGREE with you!
Sh*T -- if there's ANYONE who made Tennessee a Basketball school, her name is Pat Summitt!

Let's see how long it takes for Pearl to be fired at Auburn...

BTW --- anyone watch the ESPN 30 for 30 on the point-shaving scandal at Boston College in the late 1970s?
Anyone want to GUESS who was a student manager FOR the BC Eagles at the time?

Here's a hint -- the douchebag's name is BRUCE PEARL

The NCAA should PERMANTELY BAN him from Coaching in the NCAA

While you guys are tossing out disparaging remarks about Pearl, how about some remarks about North Carolina where academic fraud went on for 20 YEARS.

Amen! You could probably find something on EVERY school but unc's is ridiculous -- RIDICULOUS! and it was MBB, football... how many OTHER sports?

wbb? soccer? baseball???

but SURELY you're not DEFENDING Pearl are you?? He was involved in the D. Thomas case at Illinois --- taping phone calls
I EVEN heard Royce Waltman's bride call him an ******! HILARIOUS!

If I recall correctly CBS Evening News said over 3,000 students took the bogus African-American course which was initiated primarily for athletes.

Not a big surprise that the fan base is excited over the hiring. The guy might be a slime ball like Calipari and a few others but he is the kinda guy that ignites a fan base. Tennessee is a football school (except for women hoops) and they still wanted to hire him back after he left UT. The guy can coach and will have the fan base eating out of his hand. SEC is fair game after UK in hoops so I could see him making some noise with the Tigers. Plus it helps recruiting with all the media buzz he brings to a program.

If I was a Purdue fan (and I am most certainly NOT), once they fire Painter (which should be after this year), I'd demand that the school go to deep pocketed alumni and beg for money to hire Pearl away from Auburn. Purdue certainly has more hoops tradition than Auburn, a better fanbase, and hiring this guy could bring them back to national prominence.

If I was a Purdue fan...

Purdue is notoriously cheap when it comes to paying. I think that's why Painter almost left for Missouri. I believe that was partially motivated by trying to get better pay for his assistants. In addition, I think that potential move, damaged him recruiting wise.

It's a big year for Painter.

Painter's flirtation with mizzu was COMPLETELY about getting more $$$ for the assistants. That should have been apparent to ANY casual MBB fan when Rick Ray left there to take the same job at CLEMSON (clemson?!?! for MBB?!?!?!)

If Painter has time left on his contract, he will not be fired. Purdue is VERY firm in eating losses (if necessary) to keep from paying 2, 3, 4, people for the same job (ala gloomington paying sphincter knight, mike davis AND kelvin sampson - SIMULTANEOUSLY.

I think it's interesting that we have one thread on here about the UNC situation and leaving the NCAA, and this thread in which many are advocating for teams to want to hire Bruce Pearl, one of the most notorious cheaters of all time in college basketball and someone who is almost guaranteed to do it again.

It's not really that surprising is it? Until the NCAA has the rules or power in place to banish cheating coaches from getting rehired, someone will always give that person a shot because they know it likely means wins which equals fans excited about the program which equals dollars.

Now that's thinking outside the box!!!

I'm a partial Purdue fan.....the years of Billy Keller, Mount, Bavis, Herman Gilliam, Larry Weatherford, George Faeber, and other supporting cast members....are memories of a lifetime....

Almost as memorable as watching the ISU team of Newsome, Copper, Hollenbeck, Humes, Rich Mason and Fred Hardman...and others....it's too bad this ISU team didn't get to play Purdue during these glory years...it would have one heck of scoring slug fest!
