Great weather for today's contest between The Sycamores and The Governors at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute. Sunny skies and about 60-degrees to start the game at 3:00 p.m. (ET).

While JT Stenftanagel will start the game for ISU, Coach Heller says to look for them to throw a lot of pitchers. He says it is likely that both Jake Petricka and Joe Rodriguez will thow an inning each along with several relievers.

This is the final game before heading into the first conference series this weekend at home. ISU is hoping that they can do some final tune-ups during the game today and come out with a victory to put them at 13-5 overall for pre-season play.

Today's contest will be available on WISU at 89.7 FM and on-line at www.indstate.edu/wisu and Live Stats will be available as well: The links to both are below:

As a side note...Ryan Strausborger today was named to the watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award, which each year honors the nation's best college short stop. Yes, although he plays center, second and short...his four games at short are enough to put him on the 54 man watch list! Here's a link to the article appearing at gosycamores.com:

Due to technical problems at WISU...there was no pre-game show today! And it doesn't appear that we'll have the start of the game either! Everyone is in pretty much their normal positions with the exception of Liniger at DH, Ort at 1B, Grgurich at 2B, Ferguson in RF...Graham is behind the dish. Not sure why Lucas isn't DHing.

The Austin Peay Governors are up to bat in the top of the first, facing ISU's JT Stentffenagel...not a good start for JT as he gave up three straight singles, followed by a walk and a sacrafice fly. Three runs in with one out...next batter singled...that was followed by a pop up and a groundout. Governors lead 3-0.

In bottom of the first...Strausborger led off with a single to right field...Burnam struck out swinging and on the same pitch, Strausborger was tagged out at second trying to steal...Fieser popped out to center field. 3-0 in favor of AP.

Still no radio on-line feed. I've tried calling and can't get anyone and I sent e-mail to the play-by-play guy, but he's probably thinking he's on the air and won't see it!

Radio came back on at 3:25!

Going to the top of the second...Brandon Dorsett on to pitch...first batter struck out swinging...next batter grounded out to Dorsett...next batter reaches on four straight balls...final batter pops out to Ferguson in right. Still 3-0, Governors.

In the bottom of the second frame...Graham reaches first on a grounder up the middle on an infield single...Liniger hits a shot down the third base line...Graham advanced to second, Liniger out at first...Graham steals third...Ort hits a single through the right side driving in Graham...Grgurich grounds out to pitcher...Ort advances to second with two outs...Ferguson (who along with Grgurich were transfers mid-year from Coach Heller's old School--Northern Iowa) grounds out to short for out number three...although it appeared the 1B got pulled off the bag. Score 3-1, Governors.

In the top of the fourth...new pitcher is Blake Drake...coming off a great four inning relief performance last weekend...fly out to Straus in center after falling to 3-0 and coming back to 3-2... next batter grounds out to Ferrell at short...final batter grounds out to Grgurich for a 1-2-3 inning. That gives Drake five consecutive hitless innings in relief! Govs lead 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth...Liniger strikes out swinging...Ort (with a nine game hitting streak) hit on the hands and goes to first... Grgurich pops a single into right...runners on the corners with one out...Ferguson lays down a great sac bunt to drive in Ort and Ferguson turned out to be safe at first...runners at first and second with one out...new pitcher is Matt Marsh for the Govs who has pitched 17 innings and has a 3.42 ERA...Ferrell strikes out swinging...Straus is up with two on...Strausborger hit a deep liner down the right field line barely in foul territory, then he flys out to center. Score now 3-2 in favor of AP.

As we go to the top of the sixth, the Sycs are outhitting the Govs 12-7...new pitcher is Jason Van Skike also getting an inning in before the opening weekend of the MVC play...first batter flys out to right on one pitch...pinch-hitter for Govs takes his time getting into the box...batter walks on four pitches on a close pitch...this umpire has not been giving the corners much to either team...next batter hits into a double-play (3 to 4) to end the inning. ISU up 6-5.

Into the bottom of the sixth frame...Ray remains on mound for Govs...Burnam (who was the lead-off batter last inning) hits ground ball to first and Burnam is out after bobbling the ball (3 to 1)...Fieser grounds out to third...Graham, up with two out and no baserunners, grounds out to first for final out of the inning. Still 6-5 Sycs.

Starting the seventh frame...the new ISU pitcher is Scott Harlan who has eight previous appearances on 8.1 innings and a 0.00 ERA. First batter grounds out to second on the first pitch...next batter hits a towering drive that Strausborger leaps to catch on the warning track in center field--about ten feet from the wall...third batter goes to 0-2 before grounding out sharply to Ferrell at short. Sycs maintain their 6-5 lead.

Moving to the top of the eighth...new pitcher for ISU is Kevin Mann who has a 4.15 ERA in 13 innings and four wins in relief...first batter made in right by a sliding Ferguson...next batter grounds out to Grgurich (2B) who gets a tipped ball off the glove of Ort (1B). Mann covers first to make out number two...next batter goes to an 0-2 count, but comes back to a 3-2 count (fans convinced the umpire didn't call two of the pitches properly) before walking...two outs with a runner on first... Mann makes a good pickoff move but Ort gets ball stuck in glove and runner steals second...runner then steals third...Mann a little rattled...they intentionally walk the batter. Runs on the corners with two outs. Coach Heller coming out for a pitching change. New pitcher is freshman closer Tyler Browning who will get the final out and probably go on to pitch the top of the ninth. Tyler making his tenth appearance, pitching 13 innings with a 1.38 ERA. Looking for his fourth save on the year. Runner steals second. Runners on second and third. Browning takes batter to a 2-2 count with two outs...ball hit to Ferguson in right for the final out. Still 6-5 in favor of ISU.

ISU looking to pad their lead in the bottom of the eighth...Ray stays on the mound for the Govs...as Ray has had two solid innings thus far. Ferguson leads off inning by getting hit on the leg...runner at first...Ferrell (who is 2 for 3) sac bunts Ferguson to second...Strausborger (1 for 3) walks... runners on first and second with Burnam coming to plate...Burnam (2 for 4) grounds out to first...runners advance to second and third with two outs...Fieser is the best man for this situation... another pitching change... Zac Gerler has a 9.95 ERA with four saves in 12.2 innings... A number of student athletes have come out to the game...Fieser hits a pop-up behind the plate, it hits catchers glove and pops out...Fieser pops up to first in foul territory to end inning. In the top of the ninth...Tyler browning comes back to the mound after getting ISU out of a real pickle in the top of the eighth...getting a crucial out to maintain the one run lead. Browning is the first pitcher to go more than an inning today. Looking for his fourth save on the year. This is a freshman having a great first year. The first batter grounds out to Ferrell at short...last batter grounds out to pitcher. Browning gets the save. The win goes to Mann. ISU wins another one-run game 6-5.

The Sycamores moving to 13-5 with six wins in a row. The guys are showing a lot of composure under pressure on offense and defense. I am just so amazed at the maturity that freshman Tyler Browning is showing on the mound. Pitching is largely a mental exercise...followed by hitting the spots...followed by speed. Here early in the season Browning is showing that he knows what he's doing...well beyond his tender years. The postgame show was drowned out by LOUD music so I couldn't hear anything Coach Smiley was saying. When the music abruptly ended...there was the sounds of silence.

You do a GREAT job, Bluepower...keep it up! 13-5 now - not a bad roll going into the MVC season.
How are the other MVC squads faring this season?

Using a broad brush...Creighton is 10-4...Indiana State is 13-5 (with four of those losses by two or fewer runs)...and Wichita State is 12-5. the rest of the league has a losing record with...surprise...Missouri state being 5-13! The W-L records for the other teams are their records going into today's games. There are no final scores for them yet.

Big hits by Robby Ort and Ben Ferrell today. Nice to see Blake Drake continuing to get better. Tyler Browning is doing an oustanding job!
