The article says there are nine players. Seven were announced priviously a couple of weeks ago and with the addition of Zahn, that makes eight. Who is the ninth?

Looks like it was corrected.

Just curious as I don't follow baseball recruiting, but what causes the retention issues as it seems like most teams have to recruit a lot of new players yearly? I know we signed some freshmen last year that are no longer with the program -- what happens for us to lose them?

Retention

Jason,

If you are asking about how losing scholarship players affect the NCAA APR figure, you do not lose the APR retention point if they transfer to another 4 year institution with a 2.6 GPA at ISU. Most of the time, that is the case.

Where we get hurt is when they transfer to a 2 year school or transfer to a 4 year school and have less than a 2.6 at ISU. Also, APR only includes kids on athletic scholarship.

Hope that helps.

And by the way, Zahn is not a 2012 signee. We can't sign juniors. Zahn is a 2011 kid.

Jason,

Sometimes they just don't pan out. If they aren't ready to start or be in line for a future starting role, they are cut from the squad. If they can't make the grades, they are cut. We had a couple who were dismissed after last season and I believe one or two who left to get more playing time. I think they can play right away if they go to a DII or DIII or NAIA school...or even back to JC. One of the drawbacks to bringing in players as freshmen is that they may not make it through the program. With only 11.5 scholarships for DI baseball, you have to keep the number of players down.

Bluepower, they are in an entering class based upon the year they matriculate at ISU (first term of full time enrollment). Thus, all kids who are coming next year for the first time are called "2011 Signees." It has nothing to do with when their particular sport's season occurs.

I think were saying the same thing. He is scheduled to be on the 2012 team and will enter ISU in the fall of 2011.
