Going into this weekend (before he put up another 200 yard game) Shakir Bell was leading the nation in total yards rushing (912) and tied for the lead in average yards per carry (9). If Bell was playing in the FBS he'd be one of the leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy right now. What he's done the first 7 games of this season is truly un-speakable. To think he didn't even play in the second half at Northern Iowa?? Are you freaking kidding me?

I pose this question - is it possible or am I being to much of a homer to call Shakir Bell the best back in all of college football so far this season? Why or why not?

If Shakir was playing at a different FCS school and I'd never seen him play and I was looking at his stats alone, I'd probably think the guy was a phenomenal player.

Steve McNair played at Alcorn State, won the Walter Payton award, and finished third in Heisman voting his senior year.

Best back in the FCS? Yeah you can make a pretty compelling case.

If you're including the FBS is that umbrella, then no. I mean yeah his stats are really impressive, but those numbers wouldn't be the same at the FBS level.

With that being said, he's had an incredible year and it's very reassuring to know we will still have him in the fold for another two seasons after this one!

I'm talking best back in college football - I understand he's not playing against some of the defenses that those guys in D1 are used to playing against. But Bell isn't running behind the O-Line that some of those guys are used to running behind - although our line has done a fantastic job. You look at the first 7 games of the season and be it statistically or otherwise Shakir Bell has been the best back in all of college football.

Even if he's just the best back on paper, that's quite an accomplishment to even be in the conversation. That's more than quite an accomplishment, it defies logic.

I looked at NCAA I-AA statistics this morning and Bell, is indeed, the new #1 rusher in all of I-AA, he's averaging over 160 yards per game, and a WHOPPING 9.1 yards per carry. that is just sick!

I think he is the best back in FCS and that is not even up for discussion...he is not the best back in FBS but he would be a very good running back at the fbs level too no doubt

Probably not but I don't understand why people are so quick to dismiss the idea? I mean his numbers put him in the conversation right? He was the #2 leading rusher in the nation his SR. year at WC right? It's not like he was playing against cake walks other than the two Terre Haute schools right? He was a Parade All American RB right?

From what I have seen and I watch a lot of college football. This guy is one of the top 5 backs in college football and his size may once again keep him from playing at the next level but I'm not even talking about that. Bell has put himself in that conversation is all I'm saying, don't be quick to dismiss the idea.

I'll say it is an interesting thought for sure and you're not crazy for bringing it up for sure....but there are too many variables that come into play....Let's look at all three of the Alabama RB's....Did you see what they did to ole miss...it is hard to say that anyone is better than them...and they are really big....fbs has a better o-line but there are also better D's so it can even out...I really wish we would have been into rythm at the penn state game...those lb's ran 4.3's and 4.4's....I would have liked to see what he could do in the open field against them...

Bell needs his own Sports Illustrated cover just like Larry Bird with the cheerleaders "Shhhhhhshing" with College Football's Best Kept Secret.
