Caitlin Brez, assistant professor of psychology, and Petra Nyendick, director of the Community School of the Arts at Indiana State, began a study in September to see why music instruction benefits math skills.
My wife is an music elementary teacher who has been claiming that for many years... Who am I to argue, happy wife, happy-happy-happy life..Especially when her music room is rignt across the hall from my gym......
Being a music teacher myself, I'll never turn down extra reasons for people to support music. However, it should be noted that advocating for music because of its benefit to other academic areas (which is measurable, but small) is usually outpaced by just scheduling another class of the same kind. Another math class helps math scores more than music does.
Advocate for music for music's sake and soak up the collateral benefits as a bonus.
