LaVar Ball has jumped the shark:

On Friday, LaVar was a guest on "The Dan Le Batard Show," and was asked why they decided to charge $495 for the shoes. In typical LaVar fashion, his answer was part confidence, part funny, part simplicity, and a whole lot of boisterous.

"I figured that's what the shoe was worth," Ball told Le Batard. "I liked the way it sounds. You see, when you are your own owner, you can come up with any price you want."

Do yourself a favor and go listen to the video included in the link. This guy is going to cost his son millions.

I wondered how long until an athlete tried something like this. It will be interesting to see what, if any, success he has. Nike, UA, Adidas, etc. have spent billions to create a brand and develop a network. I guess Lavar believes he can do the same cheaper. My guess is he finds out it is harder than he thinks.

On the other hand many great business icons were told what they were doing couldn't be done.

LaVar Ball is hilarious, and he's playing everybody like a fiddle. He doesn't really believe the stuff he's saying, but he says it with such braggadocios conviction that people eat it up. He's taking society's propensity to be outraged by everything, and he's using it to his advantage. In today's quick-reaction climate, those who say things the loudest get the attention.

I guarantee they sell A LOT of those shoes. He also charges $50 for a t-shirt on their website that probably costs $2.50 to have made, and people are still buying them. It doesn't really matter if the shoe sells more than the latest version of X Player's Nike's, he's already won the battle he's fighting - to be noticed and relevant.

Are people buying them? Every sports fan I know things he is a clown and I've never seen any of the gear here in Indy. It will either be a rousing success like you mention or it is going to blow up and he is going to alienate his son to the point where he fires him.

When that kid gets in a NBA locker room and his dad isn't there controlling the message, he is going to get a different view of the world.
