You beat me to it...lol...Glad to hear it sounds like this will FINALLY happen at ISU! Here is a interesting tid bit about it.

Indiana State foundation development director Jack Fox said a donor who wants to remain anonymous is funding much of the project.
The foundation is also looking to raise $50,000 for a Larry Legends Scholarship by selling small copies of the statue.
 
Great to see it actually happening. Oops, I probably just jinxed it. Oh well...

Sad that they didn't give any credit to the young man that was on here a year or two ago who started this whole thing. It would be nice to give credit where credit is due, and from his story, ISU was mostly a hinderence in the process, rather than a help. He should get some of the kudos - not people who weren't even around at the time...
 
All I can say is...it's about time! We're about 20 years behind on all things Bird-related (i.e. retiring his number too far too long, too). We certainly should focus on our current team, but there's nothing wrong with praising past greats. I definitely like the part where the article said the intent is to make sure the statue is taller/bigger than Magic's.
 
This is the part that I find ridiculous...

"Sculptor Bill Wolfe tells the Tribune-Star that he wants to make sure Bird's statue is taller than those of Magic Johnson."

And it's not just the sculptor that feels this way, many (including folks on this board) have voiced that they want the statue taller than Magic's.

Needing a statue (a freakin' statue) to be taller than another statue just screams inferiority complex to me.

But like everyone else, I'll be very glad when the statue is complete.

Looking at it another way, Bird and Magic competed at EVERYTHING. It could be viewed as Bird getting one up on Magic.

We're late on a lot of past recognition; not just Larry; but it's a step in the right direction.

This was on Indy TV news last night--channel 59 and/or 13. I was too near asleep to remember. Seems like they were good with it being bigger than Magic's.
