I went to the top 60 and IU got the two best players in the state. If I had been a PU fan I would not have been too excited.
Odum and RJ looked ok. The play was a little haphazard and rough. Not a lot of post feeds, of course.
Several decent small guards.
Koch or Ryan not what I would call impressive in that environment.
Kenny showed some skills.
The two SIU kids were just ok (Brown from Evansville and the kid from Forest Park)
Scott Wood had a nice shot, hops, and handle. Looked like Reggie Miller.
Barlow, Bade and Byrd (PU) were ok but did not look like impact players.
Butler's big kid is not an impact player either. Not much in athletic ability.

In my opinion, Hulls was the only option for Mr. Basketball.

I agree that I'm not totally impressed with the Purdue kids. I feel as though IU is in much better shape in terms of recruiting classes. IU is going to re-establish themselves as the school that will get the best players from Indiana. BELIEVE THAT!

You're right about IU.
I think Elston has the tools for mr. B. I've always been impressed with him. Very mobile and versatile for a 6'8" guy.
I was satisfied that Jake and RJ could do what I thought they could do. I would have liked to have seen RJ get more rebounds but I saw several times when he was in postion and it wasn't close to him. Some of the players wanted to make all of the plays and that hurts some of the high majors and some of the midmajor "team" players.
I think the indiana class is down for high majors and PU signed too many in-state kids. I was really surprised when I saw Bade. Not a lot of athletic ability. Barlow has a nice shot and a good team player as is Byrd, but there's certainly no guarantee that they will be better than average contributors at PU. I don't see PU moving up soon.

I should mention that RJ has a really nice 10 ft J, bank or straight in. Don't ever take that for granted! Some players (like Bade (PU)) looked pretty bad trying to bank it in.

I thought it was a two horse race between Elston and Hulls. Hulls won out because his team was so successful. That's not an insult; he is a very solid guard and deserving of the award. Elston can dominate the glass and defend the post. I expect him to be a force immediately at IU.

Byrd had a shot for a while and is very, very strong physically. He's a player anyone would want.

Scott Wood is the best shooter anywhere; he's also a great kid!

Colt Ryan is the real deal and was my pick for the award. However, you just don't get enough love being from that area of the state and not going to IU. Colt, Hulls, and Brown were dominant the week before at the North-South game. Brown is ultra-athletic and plays very hard.

Koch is also very good, he is a steal for Wright State. I also think Smith is better than described. He is very big and much stronger than advertised. He averaged 17 boards in high school! With improved footwork, he can really help Butler.

Didn't get to see Barlow this year. He's a great athlete. Good to hear his jumper is coming around. Didn't get to see Bade this year either. I thought he was the best big of the bunch last all-star season.

All these kids are good. The Top 60 was a tough evaluation because so many kids refused to pass the ball...especially those who thought they might be able to sway an all-star nod their way.

The play at the North-South game was a little more telling for me. I was a little disapointed with the Top 60.

Purude recruits are fine.....If i was Purdue fans i would be excitied for the next two years. Purdue returns its awesome soph. class. and their 3 solid Jrs. When Hummel and JJ are seniors who do you think is going to be Kramers replacement. BYRD!!! Hes a strong athletic kid that can play D.....This years Boilers are all role players.....They have their superstars in Hummel, JJ, and Moore. I expect in the next year for the Boilers to pick up game changers(scorers).

Bruce Grimm, Jr.

Do you think Bruce Grimm. Jr. of Rochester will make the team? After watching the final game I think it would be a travesty if he did not.

I don't know if he belongs or not. I haven't seen him. but I know he will make it due to the exposure he got in the finals. The whole all-star process is sad.

Since Grimm finished 2nd in the Mr. Basketball race, I'd say he has a good shot. I'm not really sure how the process works and who gets to make the selections.

It sounds like the Indy Star's selection team gets to pick the players they want. Word at the Top 60 was that 8 players were locked in and they were looking for 5 more.

I think the team roster will be released Wednesday.

Wow! That's hard to believe. I thought the voting used to have to be in BEFORE the state finals. There's no way that Elston is not in the top 2. That's what I mean about the process being tainted. There has always been too much weight given to final 4 participants and I guess it always will be that way unless they go to strictly tryouts.

Based on our informal survey, these 11 are on the all-star team with 8 of them being guards and guard-forwards. We need at least 1 more big and 1 other. Who did I leave out? I think RJ could make it but there are several competing for the last 2-4 spots.

Normally they would put some in from the state finals, like from Princeton or Fort Wayne. I don't know who they would eliminate from this list other than Smith or Koch, based on what I saw of top 60. There's also Barlow and Mr. Football from Carmel. I don't want anyone to think that I believe that RJ's not good enough for it. I guarantee that if Rockville had one the state, he would have made it. There's nothing better than TV exposure.

There are 25 guys who are possible members of the squad. No choice would be a bad choice.

Locks...
1. Hulls (IU)...Obviously
2. Elston (IU)...most likely to succeed next year
3. Byrd (Purdue)...very good
4. Bade (Purdue)...need bigs, here's a good one
5. Van Treese (Louisville)...another great big guy
6. Ryan (Evansville)...wow
7. Wood (NC State)...great shooter

Likely
8. Grimm...state finals performance made the difference
9. Koch (Wright State)...overcomes off court issues...solid player
10. Brown (SIU)...tough to make the team from Evansville but too good to be left off

Hopefuls (pick three)
Smith (Butler)...team needs a big...from Indy gives him a boost
Odum (ISU)...great MIC season...tough to make it from this area
Kenney (Valpo)...Indianapolis Star area player gives him a boost
Mahurin (ISU)...big who can shoot keeps him alive
Kurth (Valpo)...too many guards in top group but great player
Loveless...solid player
Reid...I like this one...great rebounder...team needs bigs
Myers (SIU)...another dark horse... good player
Peck (Cornell)...another Indy local with skills to make team
Anthrop...could not go wrong here

My sources told me Odum didnt make the team and either did RJ. IMO Odum not making it is a joke.

Well, I give up. If we don't have an all-star this year we never will again. Now that Butler has risen, we have to beat out several other schools' recruits, indy players, and state finalists. Too big of a mountain to climb. Someone ought to get a 'B" all-star team together and play somebody.
