That's a shame. One of the greatest coaches ever. Outside of basketball, if you talked bird hunting, he was just another guy who loved to hunt. A sad day for basketball.

Rest in peace.

Guy I worked with was on Knights first team at IU. He said the players all heard about his fierce reputation when he was hired and some, including him, were a bit apprehensive.

One of Knights first days on campus, he has his secretary call this player...she says "Coach wants to meet you today at 1 PM"...guy didn't have any classes, and the secretary knew it, so he said he'd be there. Said when he walked in to Knight's office, Bobby was standing behind the desk with his back to him...tells him to sit down, which he does. He said Knight turned around and said, "I've only got one question for you...do you go to class"? Guy said he was a dork and didn't have much of a social life, so he didn't have to lie to Knight when he said, "Yes, sir". To which Knight replied, "You better keep it up and you can tell some of these other (*&&*&)#$'s that they better start attending class cause I'm gonna run their ass out of here if they don't. You can leave, now". And that was his introduction to Bobby Knight.

I loved watching the Hoosiers 70's era teams, but when Bobby started escalating some of is antics, I thought it was sad....and unnecessary.

RIP

I'm trying to recall how many times he was caught, cited for hunting and/fishing out of season, or without the appropriate license or taking more than the daily limit.

I received a text from a college buddy recalling the time knight shot his friend in the back while illegally hunting in wisconsin...

I believe his family will miss him

Yes, I had an opportunity to get to know Coach Knight when he recruited Brian Evans and Steve Hart at South. If we were in his office or in the gym at South our conversations would get around to quail hunting. He love the sport. I will always treasure those conversations.

Not a fan of IU or coach Knight, but I wouldn't wish his decline (dementia) on anybody. A winning coach, who often
bullied people. Like former president Trump....not much middle ground, love him or hate him for most people.

Does anyone else remember when Bobby Knight was in the Hulman Center and he was way out of the coaches box up at half court while the game was going on? Oh wait that was Gregg Marshall, nevermind, and of course he didn't get T'd up for it either. Typical MVC favoritism on full display.

Question: is it true that according to the coaches wishes, he was buried 6 ft under and upside down, so that you can all kiss my ass!

I believe he said..."when my time on earth is gone and my activities here are passed, bury me upside down so my critics can kiss my ass!" I laughed my ass off when I heard him say that.

this a.m. -- national news ran a bit on his death... they opened the piece with his chair hurling... they closed with the above bit... they included video of the "poss hand placement on a player's throat..." they included his meltdown when a media staffer 'mistakenly' announced his non-attendance at a post-gm presser... they included the head smash of S. Wilkerson but omitted his kicking his own son...

I had never heard of this quote before, but I found it on YT. Hilarious!

Growing up in Bloomington I was as big a fan as anyone. After I left for college I stopped cheering for him and his team. He was however a great coach.

As with a lot of coaches of his generation, discipline was everything. He was the boss without any exceptions. The results were pretty darn good with mostly guys who never made it to the NBA. I didn't agree with his personal issues but I think he did a lot more good than bad. RIP to a legend of my lifetime.

a disciplinarian who was wholly undisciplined himself, to quote Lou Henson - "a classic bully"

not sure how you'll define "mostly guys who never made it to the NBA but 35+ iu players he recruited and/or coached (and those who left) spent some time in the NBA; even more overseas, CBA, etc
