The JSW Level
....back in the late 1980s.........he was a Nigerian player...a friend of mine...but for the life of me I can't remember his name....I know that's terrible.....but I just can't think of his name....he died at practice at the Arena.....

He was on the all tournament team at IU, beating out their center, Garrett, I think. He would have been one of the best centers we've had.

(I'm not sure he wasn't the MVP)

Bank...thank you!!!!!

Rotimi Alakija....he was a really good guy....used to hang out in the sports information office at the ISU Arena....as a matter of fact, he was in my office just minutes before he died....he was killing time before practice and came in to talk.....next thing I knew, there were ambulances everywhere....I ran into the Arena gym and saw Ray Baggett, the ISU head athletic trainer, working on him.....I went over to them....and I knew that Rotimi was dead.....they said that he had a massive heart attack while standing in line to run wind sprints before practice.....turned out that he had a congenital heart defect that was common among Nigerians.....but it hadn't been picked up by the normal sports medical check-up that all student-athletes had to go through....they said later that doctors would have had to run a special test just to show anything.....and even then it would have been iffy....we also found out later that several of his relatives had died of the same thing...but he never said anything to anybody about it when they were checking out his medical history....

that was a tough couple of years....we also lost a football player....Rob McIntyre......he was a defensive lineman...he died of the same type of thing.....he had died of some sort of bacterial deal with his heart.....had symptoms of a bad cold and it just got steadily worse....his health dropped very quickly....within a matter of hours....and then he was gone.....

It seemed like ISU basketball was cursed in those days. Cancer, rare nerve disorder, death in practice, and I'm sure there were more that I'm not thinking of. That was the end for three promising recruits. There was the game we finished with 2 players. Then there was the hot dog incident. On a more minor note, there was the broken nose, the lost front teeth, and the jail time.

Richie didn't have a heart problem.....but he did have a stroke....

Richie went in for knee surgery in Indy.....while he was playing at Indiana State.....but they gave him some medication....that he was allergic to.....during the operation.....he had a bad reaction to the medication...which caused him to have a stroke.....on the operating table....and go into a brief coma.....he came out of it....but was unable to play basketball anymore.....

Akinola

Hey, Tjames. Do you remember Olifemi Akinola from 87-89? Sorry if I butchered the spelling. He was in my dorm when I was there. Played cards with myself and baseball players Joe Golebiewski, Kurt Olson, Jamie Allison and Darren Peters, along with basketball player Lee Moore. Femi was a great guy.

Whatever happened to the 6'9" IN All-stater Moore? He was "farmed out" to Don Smith (Ron Greene's ol' buddy from New Orleans) @ Brevard CC in Cocoa, Fl for his Soph season (he only played about 10 min/game there), returned to ISU his Jr. yr, then zap...el gonno! I was really disappointed...thought Moore was gonna get some prime "developmental minutes." However Smith had 5 or 6 OTHER big-time collegiate "projects" that seemingly took preference over Moore/ISU.
