we used to have a preseason jonah club fish fry at memorial stadium before the start of every football season. it would be held usually in late august, about a week before the season opener.

fans were invited out to watch practice, meet the players and coaches, get autographs. the band and cheerleaders would be there.the two local tv stations would do live shots from the event, with the sports anchors doing their 6 p.m. sportscasts from the stadium. one or two local radio stations would do live spots from there as well.

for a nominal fee, fans could purchase tickets for their meal (fish, cole slaw, baked beans, ice cream and either a soft drink, iced tea or lemonade). fans were also urged to purchase an extra ticket or two that would help pay the costs of meals for the players, cheerleaders and band members.

coach raetz used to get out there and introduce each player, without the benefit of a roster i might add. he would talk off the top of his head about each player, usually cracking a joke about each guy, as they were introduced.

the players, usually wearing a game jersey, would then sit in the stands with fans and get to know them. some fans would opt to ask for a particular player or group of players to sit with them.

the sycamore varsity club used to host the event. if they can't do it, i would hope that a new sponsor could be found.

other things that we used to do.....

have a booth set up at the vigo county fair each summer for the athletic department and have coaches and players there to meet and greet fans, give out schedule cards and promotional posters.

did the same thing at honey creek square mall with a kiosk one or two weekends in august with athletes and coaches there to meet and greet fans, hand out schedule cards and promotional posters and sign autographs. we would also show the team's recruiting highlight video from the previous season on a couple of monitors.

had a coach's tv show that aired each week during the season.

i would love to see indiana state get back to doing some of the things that we did back in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s.

Shit bring Tom James back to Indiana State, he seems to still have some pretty good ideas, need to freshen them up a little bit but he is still showing good forum! Either use his ideas or get him in here to get emm done!

All great ideas!!! All these things should not only be done (or something similar) but should never have been stopped. But then, budgetarily it is surprising that football still exists after the Meyer years.

fish Fry

I agree, community events through out year, fish fry would be fun. Sell stuff! T-shirts , hats, shorts, sweat shirts, coats(it'scold in N.D. in Oct - Nov). Profits to football program. Maybe be able to buy the boys another travel outfit or something.

Coach Raetz's son, Mark- Head Coach of TH South, did the fish fry and player introduction a few years ago at South. It was a great success. Everybody's revved up for some football the week before the opening game. Great idea!!!
