we used to have a preseason jonah club fish fry at memorial stadium before the start of every football season. it would be held usually in late august, about a week before the season opener.
fans were invited out to watch practice, meet the players and coaches, get autographs. the band and cheerleaders would be there.the two local tv stations would do live shots from the event, with the sports anchors doing their 6 p.m. sportscasts from the stadium. one or two local radio stations would do live spots from there as well.
for a nominal fee, fans could purchase tickets for their meal (fish, cole slaw, baked beans, ice cream and either a soft drink, iced tea or lemonade). fans were also urged to purchase an extra ticket or two that would help pay the costs of meals for the players, cheerleaders and band members.
coach raetz used to get out there and introduce each player, without the benefit of a roster i might add. he would talk off the top of his head about each player, usually cracking a joke about each guy, as they were introduced.
the players, usually wearing a game jersey, would then sit in the stands with fans and get to know them. some fans would opt to ask for a particular player or group of players to sit with them.
the sycamore varsity club used to host the event. if they can't do it, i would hope that a new sponsor could be found.
