Question I'd like to discuss: Is it possible that MVC refs and or mid major refs are more likely to call/watch for carrying that major conferences across the country?

Let me explain, it would seem that the MVC doesn't play as much transition basketball as the major conferences across the country, they don't have the same level of athletes in the MVC. Not a knock on the Mo, just an observation - I think the game is played a little quicker in major conferences and players are more likely to get away with the carry especially if they are in transition.

We have seen Kelly called for carry several times and I just think that they are moves that they let him get away with in the Big Ten and maybe in this conference he won't be allowed to make those moves?

To play the other side, he has only played 1 MVC game in his career and maybe officials are told to put more of an emphasis on the carry in non conference play, to make sure it's not a big problem when conference play starts.

Just wanted to get your thoughts, because I think some of the time that Kelly is getting called for carry it's more a product of the referee's lack of understanding how the ball actually go their - I call it the, "Did He Just Do That Effect" because they have no idea how ball got from point A (right hand) to point B (left hand) and they are tough calls going against him.

Ok - let errr rip!

Along those lines, I watched UK, UCONN, MSU, etc tonight. I saw LOTS of times where they moved their feet or took two steps with no call that would have been called travel on us.

Tough to say...I think oft-times it is a point of emphasis early on in the season but to me, it seems like Kelly gets called for it so often that you have to wonder if it's just him. Could it be that it's due to his height? I mean...it's a longer way down from where little 6'0" guards dribble...maybe the ref's see that and think that's gotta be a carry cuz they're not used to see the ball take so long to hit the floor? I seriously don't know...my guess is that it wouldn't get called in the NBA at all but obviously the Valley does not = NBA.

I just know that the Syc's need to cut back on these types of turnovers if they want to do damage this season. I get really frustrated w/ guys carrying and traveling.

Or in the bigger conferences the refs are taught to treat it like the NBA. Don't interrupt the flow of the game with travel calls. So what if a guy takes four or five steps between dribbles, if he's slashing to the basket for a big dunk don't interfere.

he has pretty long arms so the distance to the floor is not as great as it would be for a normal 6-5, 6-6 player. on the other hand, no pun intended, when he takes the ball out to the side like he does on a dribble, those long arms make the ball more visible as it comes to rest in his palm.

those non calls on travel have invaded high school ball as well. everyone shuffles their feet on drives or takes a little hop after catching a pass on the perimeter. another good rule gone along with palming, 3 seconds and hand checking.

the one that gets me now is carrying the ball like a football with two hands and arms wrapped around it against the chest and just taking off down the lane like a halfback with no dribble. it's amazing. seeing it more and more. of course it's not called.

Blame the officiating AND the coaching; kids will mimic anything. If the coaches and refs would rein it in, it would stop.

Another reason to dislike the NBA
