Our experts say Isaiah Canaan is the best point guard in America (US Presswire)
Conventional thinking is that 2012-13 is a down year for point guards in college basketball. Conventional thinking appears to be correct -- but only to a degree. You look at the list we’ve put together here, what do you notice? Examine it and it should come to you pretty quickly: There don’t appear to be a lot of pros on this list. And that’s the problem. While we’ve got a number of watchable, capable, talented and specialized-types at the 1 this season, how many of these players will ultimately be drafted? Ten? Maybe?

I question that there are 48 better than JO13.

So according to CBS Sports, our game against UCLA features two of the top 50 point guards in college basketball...cool.

Without having seen every PG in the country I find it hard to believe there is 47 better...I'd say Jake is top 20 at least.

If you read that setup they seem to base it on who is most draftable, the most NBA ready. I don't know enough about all of these other guys either, but their opinion seems to be that it's not a very impressive group. Based on that - being NBA ready - and what they consider a "down" season last year, I can see why they ranked him where they did. I think/hope he will be better than that ultimately, as we all do, but us getting upset about it doesn't do anything. As a whole, our team needs to improve this year and get stronger, post more wins. Until then we have no reason to complain about a lack of respect or praise, be it for the team or individual players.

I just can't grasp the idea that he had a down year. I feel like people are attributing our poor record last year to his stats and that is simply not fair. He has been our best player for the last two years. His numbers were better across the board than his Freshman season that put him on the map.

Was it the greatest year by a PG in school history? Nope. Was it a bad year? If that is a bad year I will take bad year production for Indiana State PG's from here until the end of time.

Let me say this - I don't think that Jake is one of te best 25 PG's in America. But that doesn't mean he can't play with any PG in the country - he can play with anyone in the country. But like you all I haven't seen enough of all these other PG's to say for sure.

I think it all comes down to how they're judging these guys. If you're standard is being a great, NBA caliber passer, scorer and set up man all in one then Odum and many of these other guys aren't going to make that A+++ grade. So in that case what remaining criteria are you using to evaluate them? Wins/losses, clutch shots, highlight real passes, what? Or is it their remaining ability to play basic, fundamentally strong basketball at PG?

Sure I get that - at the same time, it doesn't really matter if people keep calling last season a down year. I think he has the opportunity to put up maybe an assist or two more a game and maybe a point or two more a game. But he's not going to average more steals than he has and he's not going to average more rebounds than he did this past season. His stat line this past season is much in line with what you are going to see over the next 2 years. My point is, that's not a down year and I wish people would keep saying that. He was one of the top PG's in the league with those numbers last year. lol

Consider 2 things. He has only played two years. To be in the top 50 is an honor, especially considering that.

Also, his jump shot and range are a huge negative for him.

I think that the team record last year is probably dragging down his rating. A point guard averaging 10 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts, and 3 steals a game on a team that is .500 COULD come across as a leader who isn't doing enough, while a point guard with the same stats on a team with a .800 winning percentage comes across looking like a floor general who is getting everyone involved.

Like it or not though, many people believe if you're a great PG, or QB in football, you should lift your team to a better record. If your team doesn't win more, you're the first person to blame.

Here's a question. What would our record have been last year without Jake Odum?

I agree with bent, our record last year probably affects Jake's ranking, but being in the top 50 is still pretty special.

Lol yeah that's a fun question to ask. We wouldn't have won very many games thats for sure. We were not a very good "team" last year and I want to focus the attention towaed the word "team". No one player (good leader or not) is going to correct the issues that last years team had going on.

That said, I am done focusing on last year. Time to look toward this season and what this "team" will be able to do. What Jake Odum did last season and the year before that are very much things of the past now. Time to put up this year!!
