As I mentioned in the other thread, the NIT allows for automatic berths for regular season conference champions that do not win their conference tournaments or receive an at-large bert into the NCAA tournament. Went ahead and took a look at all of the conference brackets over on ESPN's Championship Week website and extrapolated it here. As you can see below, several regular season champs have already gone down and I'd venture a guess to say most aren't at large teams, either.

American: Cincinnati (Lost in tournament to UConn)
America East: Vermont 22-10, 111 RPI, 226 SOS (Lost in tournament to Albany) - NIT AQ
Atlantic 10: St. Louis (Lost in tournament to St. Bonaventure)
ACC: Virginia
Atlantic Sun: Florida Gulf Coast 22-12, 153 RPI, 267 SOS (Lost in tournament to Mercer) - NIT AQ
Big 12: Kansas (Lost in tournament to Iowa State)
Big East: Villanova (Lost in tournament to Seton Hall)
Big Sky: Weber State (Won conference tournament)
Big South: High Point 16-14, 187 RPI, 184 SOS (Lost in tournament to Winthrop) - NIT AQ
Big Ten: Michigan
Big West: UC Irvine 23-11, 108 RPI, 236 SOS (Lost in tournament to Cal Poly) - NIT AQ
Colonial: Delaware (Won conference tournament)
Conference USA: Louisiana Tech 27-6, 56 RPI, 221 SOS (Lost in tournament to Tulsa) - NIT AQ
Horizon League: Green Bay 24-6, 61 RPI, 165 SOS (Lost in tournament to Milwaukee) - NIT AQ
Ivy League: Harvard (No conference tournament)
Metro Atlantic: Iona 22-9, 66 RPI, 146 SOS (Lost in tournament to Manhattan) - NIT AQ
Mid-American: Western Michigan (Won conference tournament)
Mid-Eastern: North Carolina Central (Won conference tournament)

Mountain West: San Diego State (Lost in tournament to New Mexico)
Northeast: Robert Morris 22-12, 121 RPI, 253 SOS (Lost in tournament to Mount Saint Marys) - NIT AQ
Ohio Valley: Belmont 24-9, 60 RPI, 141 SOS (Lost in tournament to Eastern Kentucky) - NIT AQ
Pac-12: Arizona (Lost in tournament to UCLA)
Patriot: Boston 24-9, 84 RPI, 169 SOS (Lost in tournament to American) - NIT AQ
SEC: Florida
Southern Conference: Davidson 20-12, 142 RPI, 197 SOS (Lost in tournament to Western Carolina) - NIT AQ
Southland: Stephen F Austin (Won conference tournament)
Southwestern Athletic: Southern 19-13, 164 RPI, 246 SOS (Lost in tournament to Prarie View A&M) - NIT AQ
Summit League: North Dakota State (Won conference tournament)
Sun Belt: Georgia State
West Coast: Gonzaga (Won conference tournament)
Western Athletic: Utah Valley 20-11, 139 RPI, 282 SOS (Lost in tournament to Idaho) - NIT AQ

Just for comparisons sake, our RPI currently sits at 74 and our SOS is 148.

That was something I hadn't considered....reg season conference champs losing in their conference tourneys. THAT is the only thing that will burst our NIT bubble. As long as that number doesn't get out of hand, we're a lock. But if the NDSUs and Southerns of the world can't beat the IUPFWs and Alcorn States, then we could be screwed.

According to NYCBuckets.com.....we're on the outside looking in as for as the NIT......Hard to believe, we could finish in a conference that produces a #1 seed......have 23 wins.....and not only will not get an NCAA bid, but may not get an NIT bid either.......It's almost unbelievable if you you think about it......something, very, very wrong about that.....

NIT Bracketology (auto bids bold and IN CAPS):

1. Georgetown
8. FLORIDA GULF COAST
4. Georgia
5. Ohio
3. West Virginia
6. LSU
2. Florida St.
7. DAVIDSON

1. Arkansas
8. HIGH POINT
4. Illinois %
5. Toledo
3. Indiana
6. Maryland
2. Providence
7. Manhattan

1. Utah
8. UTEP****
4. Marquette %%
5. GREEN BAY***
3. Washington**
6. Saint Mary’s*
2. Minnesota
7. Richmond

1. St. John’s
8. VERMONT
4. N.C. State
5. BELMONT
3. Southern Miss
6. Clemson
2. Missouri
7. Middle Tennessee

Lots of notes:

*Saint Mary’s was dropped one seed line to set up a convenient game at Washington in the first round.
**Washington was moved up a little more than one seed line to set up the game. This is really a 4-5, not a 3-6.
***Green Bay is an edge 3/4 seed, they were dropped down here because this game makes way too much sense.
****UTEP isn’t really an 8 seed, though they’re the final at-large, and Davidson was moved up a line to accommodate regional preferences.
% Illinois is a 4 seed, but can’t host. This game would be played at Toledo.
%% Marquette can’t host Rd. 1 at the Bradley Center, because they’re hosting the NCAA tournament, so this game would have to be moved.

Teams On The Outside: Oregon State, Akron, Texas A&M, UNLV, Indiana St., San Francisco, Buffalo, Ole Miss, Towson, Wake Forest, Penn State, Vanderbilt

Got some help from Deleware tonight. They were down 6 to William & Mary with about 1:20 left in the game and managed to pull it out.

Looks like at worst, 19 teams could take automatic bids, which would leave only 13 openings.

Will probably end up more along the lines of 15/17 or 14/18 split.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but how does the team last year at 18-14 get an NIT bid, but there's still doubt about this years team? Just wondering.

#1 NDSU will play #2 IPFW for Summit League title tomorrow night.

I watched that too. Was pulling for SF even though for us and the NIT, it's better to have BYU win....I like SF's playing style.

Yeah, it was hard not to.

I didn't realize that is where Rex Walters ended up. I've got to think he is a young coach to keep an eye on.

this just seems ridiculous we would not get an NIT bid. Here we placed 2nd in the MVC, and yes we got beat by the Shockers 3 times but they are the #2 team in the country. Look it probably comes down to our schedule, and also the fact about the Missouri Valley being down this year as well. I still believe loosing Creighton really hurt the Missouri Valley Conference. Who did we get ? Loyala, Creighton gets 17,000 + plus in their arena, Loyalo hopefully 3,000

I agree RSPERG, but as I mentioned elsewhere on SP, ALL of the NIT projections that I saw included us but at no better than a #7 seed and most were an #8 seed. Not a resounding vote of confidence. Someone also said we have already signed an NIT contract but that wouldn't make much sense to me if we were that low a projection. Somethings wrong here. I hope the projections in the seedings.
