The Sycamore Level
Hey Guys,

First off I've been reading this forum for a while, well since being accepted to ISU, and I have to say I'm pretty excited about making the trek to Terre Haute. With that being said, I was hoping I might be able to get some opinions from a few of you in regards to living in Terre Haute.

First things first, I'm actually a Canadian, but I am familiar with the United States as I've traveled around the US a lot playing hockey and my family also has a vacation home out in Arizona. However, I'm trying to get some information about what type of options I might have in regards to housing.

I'm going to be at the school for four semesters straight, from January 2011 through to April 2012 as I'm doing my Master's in Sport Management @ ISU. I'm coming to the school blind, in that I don't know anyone at the school. I know there are a few options such as University Apartments etc. but I was hoping that someone around here might be able to give me more of a first-hand approach on what might be the best route for me to pursue in that regard.

I appreciate any help in advance!

Cheers,
Scott

Welcome aboard. I would start with a dose of Sycamore Pride just once a day, and ease your self into 2-3 times a day. I think you will like it more if you do that. Know what I am saying, hey?

And btw, Sports Mgt at Indiana State is a great program.~

Haha, I'm excited to attend a University where there's actually a bit of spirit in collegiate athletics. University sports are pretty irrelevant in Canada, which is a bit of a disappointment. I kind of wish that Indiana State had an ACHA hockey team though, or even a hockey rink in Terre Haute! Hopefully I'll make it out to Indianapolis or Bloomington to hit the ice a couple of times over the 16 months I'll be there.

Being a serious hockey fan myself, I can tell you that Indy has a fun team to watch from the United States Hockey League, the Indiana Ice. They are young and full of collegiate players but it is an exciting brand of hockey to watch. Unfortunately, Hulman Center does not have the size floor to support a hockey rink. It is perfect for hoops but could only support the smaller ice shows. Indy has maybe a half dozen public places to skate.

Well if you were going to be here more than a year I would suggest that you buy a house, very cheap to buy a home in Terre Haute. The cost of living here is pretty low really.

If you are planning on trying to live on campus you better get on it early, the spots for next year are already filling up - especially with the enrollment increase this year and the one that we anticipate for next year. With that being said, whatever you decide to do - do it sooner rather than later.

Their are several apt. complexes off campus including the Village Quarter, Garden Quarter, Heritage Trail Apts. and Cobblestone Crossings

Cobblestone is by far the nicest, but also the furthest from campus. Although close to Wal-Mart and located in the most economically stable end of Terre Haute. Not sure how else I could word that? I think it's fair to say that anything South of Terre Haute is pretty nice. Located about 12 to 18 mins. from campus. Just depends what time of day you make the trip south to north or north to south.

I guess I would recommend Heritage Trail Apts. although off campus, close to the football stadium and next to an expanding and very nice bike path/trail if you are into running, walking, biking you will love it. They are pretty nice apts. also. Located about 8 to 10 min. from campus.

That's the best I got for you man - it's a great place, I was born and raised here and I love it (if it wasn't glaringly obvious). Welcome and hope you enjoy! Best of luck to you, as I have recently started my MBA.

Awesome, thanks for the help. Yeah I'm definitely not going to live on campus. 22 years old now, so I think those days of on campus residence are beyond me. Appreciate the insights though, I'll definitely look into some of those options!

Oh yes, and the Ballyhoo has MOLSON and LABATTS.

Haha, yes that's certainly a crucial factor to consider!

Plenty of homes around town to rent, too. You just have to do some hunting to find a decent price in a good neighborhood. Really though, there aren't that many really bad neighborhoods in TH. At least not compared to most of the cities I've visited.

Yeah I think that's the route I'm going to pursue, it's just a bit difficult to do things from a different country haha. I'm actually visiting the campus at the end of the month so I'll likely do some cruising at that point, but I'm doing as much research as I can now to ensure I'm prepared ahead of time.

I'd side with Bent20 on renting a house over buying (unless you're planning on staying in The Haute after graduation...)

Not sure what the employment opportunities are in town for MA/Sports Management but typical rule of thumb on buying a house is staying ~ 5 years

Good luck and thanks for joining the Sycamore family!

while in terre haute, if u have to be a at different places at certain times and not late, always leave early. u will have to get used to stopping for trains. u will get rail roaded.

When you have an area in mind... shoot a question to Sycamore Pride and you will get a pretty good response. I have a friend that rents a home on 22nd Street (used to be their residence until she moved to England)... I'll see if she has anyone in it right now.

Awesome, appreciate the heads up!
