The Sycamore Level
Sycamore family and friends….

As our family is pretty active on this site I wanted to address this announcement before the rumor mill starts.

On Saturday, August 1st Cordell made the decision to not return to ISU for the 2009/2010 school year. Instead he has decided to attend Des Moines Area Community College.

After A LOT of talking with key advisors and reminding ourselves what Cordell’s ultimate goal is (to make it to the majors) we were reminded that positioning is the name of the game.

For those who aren’t familiar with Cordell’s past, the two knocks on him coming out of high school was that he didn’t go in the draft and that his GPA was only 2.45

If Cordell goes down to DMACC for this year he will be eligible to go back in the draft, giving him another look see by the pros. AND - his GPA for last year at ISU was 3.5 which would allow him to meet any Division I school admissions requirements.

We know it’s a heck of a gamble, with 90% of the work sitting on Cordell’s shoulders, but we think it’s the best one for his future.

Please know that this decision was very difficult. ISU was absolutely the best decision for Cordell coming out of high school. Indiana State is a TOP NOTCH university and baseball program.

I want to personally thank all of the player’s family members and alumni for your support of Cordell this past year. We will definitely continue to follow ISU baseball and wish them the best!!!

Warm regards,
SkinnyLu

As part of the Sycamore family - I wish Cordell and his family nothing but the best! Thanks for spending sometime here in Terre Haute and always being honest and open with your thoughts and opinions on this site - you enhanced our "community" while you were here.
Good luck in the ICCAC - there is some tough competition there that will contnue to prepare Cordell for his future.

One quick question - and don't feel like you have to reply:
Has ISU allowed any current baseball player a release without any question or are they asking players to wait until the new coach is hired?

Thanks for understanding...

Hi SycEm:

As of today we have not heard of any players asking for or receiving releases from ISU to play elsewhere. Cordell keeps to himself alot and has texted a few of the guys. What surprised me (as a parent) is that Cordell did not receive a call from ISU staff after the announcement of Meggs's departure. Thus, other schools were courting him but ISU must have felt they had bigger things to deal with (which i guess makes sense). Maybe some of the Jrs and Srs can comment on what they are experiencing.

BTW - we did receive one inquiry whether or not Cordell had been contacted by Meggs at U of W and the answer is no. We have heard nothing since Meggs call to announce his departure.

Certainly a blow to the program. Cordell was destined to have a good shot at the regular roatation in 2010. He showed a lot of promise as a mid-week starter and rubbed elbows with some good seasoned juniors and seniors at ISU. I join the other in wishing him only the best in the future. I'll miss beav89 and skinnylu here on sycamorehoops!

I've appreciated the hospitality that all of the ISU family have shown Cordell this previous year, as well as his family here on the board. I know this was a difficult decision for him to make, but we respect that he's taking the path he feels best puts him on the track to play professionally (which he's wanted to do since I can remember).

I don't think you're quite rid of me yet, though. DMACC has no real fan forum that I've found and I have really grown to like the Trees. Heck, you all showed me that there it is possible to dislike a conference opponent as much as I dislike the Ducks! I'm planning on following what happens with the team and the new coaching staff this coming season, and Fight On State will still be in my reading rotation with my morning coffee. I've enjoyed way too many conversations here on the board to leave.

Once a member of the sycamorehoops family...always a member...especially for such genuinely nice people such as you and skinnylu!

...as they south of the border (not KY!)..

We were just getting to know the two "wild & crazy sisters." Keep us posted on the kid's progress. It's a SMALL WORLD, I'm sure that our paths will cross in the future.

Beav, don't let too much slack get into your fly fishing line!
