Aargh

The White Level
I don't know if any InSU fans remember Craig. He's from Terra Haute and graduated from HS in 2018. Went to JuCo and finished up at Wichita State.

He's tearing it up in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. That tourney invites 64 graduated players and is an NBA tryout. Porter is emerging as probably the best prospect in the tournament He's 6'2" and is the leading shot blocker! In a recent game he had 2 blocks and 5 steals. Just missed a double double in another game because he only had 8 assists.

Terra Haute can be mighty proud of Craig. He is one of the players where basketball got him moved away from street life and possibly gang membership. Basketball barely won out over street life and Craig had some mental issues he successfully fought because of that background.

Craig was a late bloomer on the court. At the beginning of last season he was a "good" PG. The last half of the season he was looking like an NBA prospect.

What exactly is this supposed to mean? Sure, we have drug dealers here (like everywhere else), but I've never once heard anyone talk about gang violence in Terre Haute. This isn't East St Louis, Gary, or Indianapolis.

We took Washington from South over him essentially. Had a young Key and Coop with an upperclassman Barnes. But it was a miss seeing how he turned out.

There’s not exactly “gangs” in Terre Haute in the traditional sense, but there are “gangs” of people in Terre Haute that commit a high amount of violent and serious crimes. Craig may have been in that group if he followed his family, especially his brother who is a menace to society. People don’t know half of what goes on in Terre Haute because very little is reported.

Craig said on multiple occasions that if it hadn't been for basketball and people who believed in him that he was afraid of where he would have ended up. Maybe the term "gang" was overstating it, but from what he said that sure is what it sounded like.

Gangs is a reach, but we 4 sure have some rough parts of town and Craig had to distance himself from some poor influences that cost him his early high school career. He is a great story of a kid that didn't come from much and had little going for him at home, yet he found a way use basketball as a motivator to pull himself out of his situation. Would love to see him go play overseas for a few years and then come back to TH and inspire the next generation of kids.

I read an article on him a while back. It seemed to be a chance for a Wichita writer to take a swipe at Terre Haute. He made it sound like the whole city was a ghetto. We do have way to much slum areas but probably not much different than any other older city. Anyway, good for the young man for finding something. Hopefully he will continue on a good path.

Terre Haute is no worse than Evansville, Muncie, South Bend, Indianapolis, and Wichita. And by many measures, I'd bet it's better than several of those. Although I just got the feeling that Aargh was trying to say what a success story Craig is. I didn't necessarily see it as a swipe at Terre Haute. He could have come from Omaha and had those issues...

Terre Haute is definitely better than Indianapolis and it's not even close.

Political discussion and city slandering in a seemingly harmless thread about a local kid doing well. Love it.
