Scott and Eric can we get some details on where the Sycamores will be having XC camp this year?

Any guest speakers this year? Just give us some background on what a typical day at "cross country" camp looks like - I don't want the folks at sycamorehoops.com to get the wrong idea about Cross Country Camp, we actually don't run the entire time or anything like that... It's not like that at all...

Cross Country camp has been an annual Sycamore tradition since its inception in 2005 by Sean Bowman. Bowman grew up in Brown County, so he decided that it would be a good idea to hold a camp there. It is the perfect place to hold a cross country camp camp: it has good running trails, a pool, and other recreational areas to play ultimate frisbee, soccer, etc. I do not want to reveal the names of any speakers we may have yet, but let's just say we are working on it. A typical day at camp invovles one or two runs, which at Brown County is no easy task. The park has some large hills in it, so each run presents many challenges. We also play ultimate frisbee, basketball, cornhole, and we swim. Its a great time and an opportunity for incoming freshman to get to know the team before we get to school. No coaches are present; the camp is facilitated by us. It's a great way to end a hard summer of training and transition into the upcoming cross country season.

Indiana State Cross Country Camp 2009

Where? Brown County State Park….Off of Highway 46 in Brown County, IN

When? August 17 at 11:00 A.M. through August 20 at approximately noon

Why? To prepare for the upcoming season, to meet the new teammates, and to have a great time!

Brown County State Park is the perfect place to train for the upcoming cross country season. It contains a plethora of great running trails that are all very challenging, a large swimming pool, a huge grass area to play ultimate frisbee, and a relaxed atmosphere. We are camping every night here, so we obviously need tents. We also need other camping essentials, such as lights, tarps, and everyone needs to bring at least one lawn chair. A very important thing we need to bring is some kind of grill or cooking device that we can cook food on. Please let me know ASAP if you have one of these. All food will be provided. I repeat all food will be provided. If you would like to bring some of your own snacks that is fine. Here is why we buy your food: because we can buy it in bulk from SAM’s club and get it pretty cheap. This is how we split up the bill: I will purchase the camp sites, all of the food and utensils we need, and then add up the total cost of everything I have had to buy at the end of the camp. Then I will take this total and divide it by the number of individuals at camp. This will be the price you pay. This being said, the MORE people who come to camp, the LESS it will cost! Historically, my first year at the camp a lot of people came and we only paid about 20 bucks. Last year, not as many came and we all paid 35 bucks or so. Still, 35 bucks is very cheap for 3.5 days of food and camp sites, so don’t complain. If you want to complain, you don’t have to come, it’s as simple as that. Now, last year I had to call a lot of people last minute and twist their arm to bring stuff. That won’t happen as much this year. If you think that you don’t need to pitch in, you may end up sleeping out with the deer. Here is a small list of stuff we need, please let me know ASAP if you have any of this:

Tents
• Tarps
• Cooking device
• Lights
• String
• Axe
• Large coolers that dispense water or Gatorade (IMPORTANT)
• Large coolers for food and liquid storage
• Tote boxes
• Cooking utensils (Spatulas, Pots, Pans, etc.)
• Other things you think might be useful, let me know!

Now, here is the tent and parking situation. Each camp site we purchase can have a maximum of 2 tents per site and 1 vehicle. The rest of the vehicles can be parked at an overflow lot about a half a mile from the camp site. We need people with trucks or SUV’s to be parked at the camp site so that these people can transport everyone to places we need to go. Try and carpool to the camp, but if you can’t and you just have a car, that’s fine you can park it in the overflow lot.
Here is a very tentative schedule of what will transpire during camp, it is subject to change:

Monday: Arrive at 11:00 am at the IGA supermarket right off of highway 46 in Nashville, IN. You can’t miss it, you will see it on the south side of the highway coming into Nashville from the east or west. Nashville is small, so don’t think you won’t see it (if don’t, you are immediately kicked off of the team). We will gather everyone together and head into the camp, where we will immediately eat lunch. We will then set up tents and relax for a few hours. We will run at about 3 or 4. After the run: dinner. That night we can either just relax and play cornhole and stuff or we can head into town and have our annual basketball tournament.

Tuesday: Wake up TBD. Breakfast. Start ultimate Frisbee tournament. Lunch. Relax, go swimming, or finish the Frisbee tourney. Run at 3 or 4. Dinner. Possible speaker or basketball tourney.

Wednesday: Wake up early. Small breakfast. Travel to Nebo Trail for a long run. Nebo trail is a 8.7 mile out trail, so we can have groups go several different distances up to the 17.4 miles. After the run, there is the option to eat lunch at a small restaurant in a small town nearby called Story. Otherwise, you can go back and eat at the camp. The rest of the day could be spent playing Frisbee, swimming, cornhole, etc. Dinner. More of whatever.

Thursday: Wake up early. Small breakfast. Run on horse trails to Story, IN. After the run, pack up and leave. I have inside sources that say that IU’s team will be arriving relatively early in the morning on that day. I say we challenge them to a Frisbee tourney but that’s just my two cents……

You guys are all smart enough to know what to bring to a 3 day camp, but here are some ideas: running clothes, toiletries, flashlight, bug spray, sunscreen, bathing suit, etc.
So, here’s the info I need from everyone, so RESPOND TO THIS!!!!!:

Are you coming to camp or not?
Do you have a tent?
Do you have a truck?
Do you have other camping essentials?

Also, everyone bring money. CASH OR CHECK! Remember, you will reimburse me for the money I spent on the camp sites and food. It would be best to bring me a check, but if you want to bring cash that’s fine. Remember, it will be about 20-40 bucks, so keep that in mind. If you don’t pay me at camp, I’ll tack on an extra 5 bucks each week you don’t pay me. If you have any other questions at all, don’t hesitate to call me or get at me on facebook.

If history has told us anything, be sure to have a well stocked first aid kit with bandaids and creams and whatever else you need when people fall down and slide down cliffs lol.

also, betz, Im glad to see that someone in the group is smart and is bringing an axe. Chopping wood for like 4 or 5 hours was my favorite part of camp last year.

This is the last post before camp.
