Was thinking about this because my mind is exhausting and was thinking we could see the end of players like Coop moving up the ranks as fewer and fewer star players stick with schools for 4 years, which is what is needed to get up into the Top 10-20 in historical ranks.

Which leads to a second thought. Because of the phenomenon, that could elevate the standing of some of the past guys that have played here as time ticks on as their numbers will stand up.

Trying to put my experience at ISU in perspective with your post, even though I did not compete in college Division One sports. I think there is something to be said for not wanting to risk the portal or leave your present situation. If you really like the coach, your teammates, and if your other friends off campus and family are close enough to come watch you play, why leave? When I was a freshman at ISU, I came to campus at 17 years old, first time away from home and did not know anyone. My classmates from high school had all gone to other schools. I was lost and pretty lonely. My roommate in Fairbanks Hall was from Long Island and really homesick. He dropped out and went home after 6 weeks. I convinced myself that I could stick it out for a year and transfer to the University of Illinois. A much larger school that I was more familiar with. In December I decided to give Fraternity Rush a try and ended up pledging Sigma Phi Epsilon. Even if I hadn't gone greek, I am sure that after a year I would have stayed. ISU really was the right fit for me. I began to make friends and establish relationships with people that would last a lifetime. I say this because even at 18 years old I soon realized that there are things that are more important than going to a school that is bigger, has more supposed prestige, and glamor. Why would a college athlete just give all that up and go into the portal and start his career all over again? A lot of unknowns are out there to that individual. I hope the portal exists for those that truly are unhappy with their choice of schools even after they have really given it their best shot. Not for someone who wants to go to a bigger program with just NIL money, TV exposure and so forth. There is plenty of competition in the MVC and if you are really good, the pro scouts will find you. You don't need to go to a power 5 school a long way from home, friends, family and people who really care about you. ISU was and still is a great place to get your degree and get the college experience. I am proud to be a graduate of this great University!

For sure, just as the fifth year of eligibility puts some people higher statistically than they would have been. Nothing will be like it once was moving forward, for good and bad.

I think career records for smaller schools or even P5 ones that don't win will be safe for the most part because of the portal madness. Players from mid majors will likely leave for the bigger schools if they are putting up good numbers and good players at bigger schools will jump ship to other schools if they're not wining.

Just to clarify, if a player puts himself in the portal what is the consequence if he does not find the school that he wants to transfer to? At what point does he lose his scholarship? I know that Coop was probably an exception as he quickly went in and out of the portal after thinking things over and meeting with our new coach, but what can happen here? I don't think a player can really test the waters and suddenly decide to return if he does not get the offer that he was hoping for? What is the deadline for declaring the school you are transferring to?

Most players that go into the portal have no intention of coming back or do not have the option. About the only guys that have the option to return after testing the portal are you top tier players. The coaches have the finite window to fill your spot so they can't just hang out waiting for guys neither. The portal is open for 60 days starting the Monday after Selection Sunday save for Graduate transfers.

Another thing it could do is Indiana kids we recruit are more likely to stay due to proximity to home so they could be the ones that line the books down the road.
