Trying to put my experience at ISU in perspective with your post, even though I did not compete in college Division One sports. I think there is something to be said for not wanting to risk the portal or leave your present situation. If you really like the coach, your teammates, and if your other friends off campus and family are close enough to come watch you play, why leave? When I was a freshman at ISU, I came to campus at 17 years old, first time away from home and did not know anyone. My classmates from high school had all gone to other schools. I was lost and pretty lonely. My roommate in Fairbanks Hall was from Long Island and really homesick. He dropped out and went home after 6 weeks. I convinced myself that I could stick it out for a year and transfer to the University of Illinois. A much larger school that I was more familiar with. In December I decided to give Fraternity Rush a try and ended up pledging Sigma Phi Epsilon. Even if I hadn't gone greek, I am sure that after a year I would have stayed. ISU really was the right fit for me. I began to make friends and establish relationships with people that would last a lifetime. I say this because even at 18 years old I soon realized that there are things that are more important than going to a school that is bigger, has more supposed prestige, and glamor. Why would a college athlete just give all that up and go into the portal and start his career all over again? A lot of unknowns are out there to that individual. I hope the portal exists for those that truly are unhappy with their choice of schools even after they have really given it their best shot. Not for someone who wants to go to a bigger program with just NIL money, TV exposure and so forth. There is plenty of competition in the MVC and if you are really good, the pro scouts will find you. You don't need to go to a power 5 school a long way from home, friends, family and people who really care about you. ISU was and still is a great place to get your degree and get the college experience. I am proud to be a graduate of this great University!
