KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Louisville assistant Kareem Richardson has been hired as the basketball coach at Missouri-Kansas City, where he'll try to rebuild a program heading to a new conference next season.

Richardson, who will be introduced at a news conference Monday, agreed to a five-year deal worth $250,000 annually. He'll remain with the top-seeded Cardinals for the NCAA tournament. Louisville opens against North Carolina A&T or Liberty on Thursday in Lexington, Ky.

Richardson has ties to UMKC after serving as an assistant from 2007-08. He's also been an assistant at Wright State, Indiana State, Xavier, Drake and his alma mater, Evansville.

The 38-year-old coach takes over for Matt Brown, who was fired after five seasons with the 'Roos leaving the Summit League for the Western Athletic Conference next season.

A little bit higher cost of living in KC too.

But still, would love it if Lansing could top the 300k plateau.

Living in KC and working within walking distance of campus, I can confidently say that the UMKC program is probably one of the 25 worst in the nation. I mean, it's in terrible shape. With that being said, though, they've been courting Kareem Richardson for weeks now and his impending hire was one of the worst kept secrets. Good luck to him...he's going to need it. Zero support from the school and community is going to be tough to overcome.

I'm guessing the 'Roos moved to the "new" WAC b/c they'll be more competitive there? Vice the vaunted Summit League?

Congrats to Richardson; seem like we have many ass'ts who move onto HC gigs elsewhere...

not many alumni as HC though...

I suppose the assumption of being more competitive in the WAC was their philosophy; honestly, I and nobody else has any idea. People in Kansas City just don't care about UMKC athletics. The students don't care, the faculty and people within the community don't care, and most alumni don't care. It's primarily a commuter campus and a place where many MU and KU graduates go for their masters and law degrees.

Coach Richardson will have a very difficult time recruiting to UMKC. They do, however, have a newly renovated arena so there's that. He should probably focus on Juco transfers and inner-city kids if he has any chance. Keep recruiting local and he may have a shot.
