RIP Coach Waltman (1942-2014)

From former Indiana State basketballer Nate Green on the health status of former Sycamores' men's basketball coach Royce Waltman: Coach Waltman in ICU, ongoing complications with his fight with cancer. I don't know many better men than him. Thoughts and prayers.

I am sure you will let us know if you get any kind of an update. Nate put it out on Facebook so hopefully he will do the same.

Heard this news just before the game tonight. It had me reflecting on how a game officiated this way would've had RW stripped down to his undershirt and screaming at half court. Tonights officiating wouldve been worth at least on tech from Waltman and possible an ejection. I miss seeing him get so animated on the sideline. Hope he keeps fighting and his health improves.

Royce is one of my all time favorites, I hope for the best. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Certainly I am not the only IU basketball fan to see this thread. I have been searching for updates for two weeks before finding this. My prayers are with Coach as well. He has been quite special as our color commentator with Don Fischer on our radio broadcasts. He has brought the knowledge from his years of coaching, an irreplaceable candor, and a sense of humor that any true basketball fan can enjoy. Get well Coach. We love you.

p.s. am sure he is smiling about ISU's success this season.

I used to love trying to pinpoint the moment he would get so fired up the jacket would go flying. Will never forget playing Oklahoma in the NCAA and we had a chance to win in regulation and we never got a shot off, and there goes Coach Waltman's clipboard smashing into the ground.

Get well coach!

I took coach Waltman's coaching basketball class. In class with me was David Moss and Melanie Boeglin (sp)

Coach Would go over things on the board then take us out to the gym to run it. He showed us a back door alley-oop play for Moss one time then we went out to the Arena to run it. I was on defense and just as we were getting ready to run the play coach Waltman stops us and say "Any of you Sons of bitches think your gonna make sportcenter and try and undercut Moss, Ill throw your ass outta here and school so fast......" We were all rolling......then I got dunked on...

Waltman owned to Loosiers! One of the best big game coaches of recent memory!

Would love to see him back in the HC before a game after he get's his health back!

Another story from his class...

We were watching a Coach Knight video on practice setup...basically it was saying guys should not be waiting in line to do a drill....have enough balls or stations to keep everyone active etc etc

The video had several minutes of IU practice on it and when it was over Coach Waltman asked us if we recognized anyone in the video...David Moss raises his hand and says. "I saw a guy that looked like you coach, but he didn't have white hair and looked 30 lbs lighter" Coach told Moss he would get him back at conditioning that afternoon....

Get well soon Coach

Coach Waltman has endeared himself to IU fans and listeners. I sought out updates on him on the web and this is where I found it. Has nothing to do with the world. Has to do with the state of Indiana, Basketball, and all of those who have made it what it is. When you love BB you love BB.

I will be watching the game on ESPN2 when the Sycamores take on Wichita State this weekend, and also when the Shockers come to Terre Haute on Feb 5th, which is scheduled for ESPN3 - which I have access to. And I certainly will be cheering on ISU.

I was completly and utterly serious in my remarks. Can't believe you were seeking updates on the health status of Coach Waltman. Still being serious!

See the difference? Yeah me neither.

Glad you found your answers here, now go back to Gloomington!

Still being serious.

Your right, this has nothing to do with the world. That we can agree on. You should know I'm just really out of touch with reality and that I work in health care and that obviously sports come before someones health.

Obviously, still being serious.

Does anyone have a current update on Coach. Would be nice to send him a message if anyone had an email or address.

I hope the stroke wasn't too severe. Cancer is scary, but you don't ever fully recover from a stroke.
