I can't help myself, gotta take a crack at this.
So, a presentation is going to take place that discusses what is stated in the article, that there are more than two genders. Well, there are not more than two genders, scientifically there are male and female. Now there are subcategories of gender, scientifically speaking within certain animals for example certain amphibians can be either male or female and switch genders. However, the basic scientific fact is that in Humans, there is male or female. When an abnormality or mutation occurs a human being can have both female and male reproductive organs. This is not considered a different or new gender, rather this is considered a abnormality that should be or maybe a better word is can be addressed through surgery.
So to the point, there are only two genders and there always will only be two genders. The speaker is coming to discuss the human psyche and the fact that there is a very small portion of our population that does not consider themselves (whether born this way or have come to this or because they just are) of a scientific or traditional gender. This 'group" of people that live their lives differently than the norm, exists and this speaker is bringing attention to this population of people. There is nothing wrong with bringing attention to this small population and making sure that students, faculty and staff understand that there is a population of people that do not consider themselves to be the traditional or scientific definition of male or female. The speaker says that there is a "considerable number of people" that fall under transgender - I would question that. I would question that because to me considerable would be 20-30% of the population and at best it is 1% (my guess).
But there is no reason to assume that this is a stamp of approval on sexuality or lifestyle or a waste of money. It is simply an educational presentation about a portion of the population. It will probably have relatively low attendance because of the divisiveness of the topic. I am sure it will be interesting and that she will provide some good insight into this issue. I know that it would be beneficial for anyone that works with students to see...like it or not, there is a group of people that deal with this issue everyday (though it is a small percentage of the entire population Resent Gallup poll showed that 3.4 % of population identifies as LGBT, which means that the percentage that is Transgender-the "T" in LGBT is even smaller).
In other words, worth discussing, worth knowing about it and being aware.
