Decent article - not sure that there is anything in there that hasn't been covered on this forum...
I would REALLY like to see the football budget vs everything else.

ISU's tennis team (when they had it) was very similar, in that there were not a lot of American's on the team.

For those that have read the posts where we talked about this no question. Unfortunately to the common fan that has been inundated with the pay for play narrative by talking heads like Jay Bilas, I bet they honestly have no clue. Everyone sees these monsterous media deals the NCAA signs but they don't think about how that is split between hundreds of schools, operating costs, etc. Hell, look at that scholarship Ornstein is going to give out -- you can tell he wants pro-play responses just by the wording and how it was presented.

I think it is good for discussion (and I'm certainly not saying that it shouldn't have been posted) - I'd just be surprised to learn that there are educated sports fans that don't realize that outside of the "elite" football programs - every other athletic department "loses" money...

Agreed. There contention among folks like Bilas are that schools and athletic departments "cook" their books with bogus charges to make the balance sheets line up. Will be interesting to see where this goes as more and more papers start bringing this discussion to light. Honestly, if it led to the P5 breaking away and the rest of Division I coming together, I'd be thrilled. One thing that keeps getting overlook is if they P5 break away, that we can just go to MAC or the remaining FBS teams and get pay days. Won't happen because they will also lose their money games.

I overlooked your tennis statement. I was honestly shocked they canned the programs. It only requires 4.5 scholarships to have a men's program and that is a drop in the proverbial bucket. When I was at State, I had classes with Peter Magnusson and I remember we were really good during those days.

The question remains: When and what needs to happen to correct all this imbalance. What could ISU do with the 12 million a year it's devoting to athletics? What if it spent one million on an annual grand alumni event. Where everything is catered for. Would this do more for the University than our current athletics? Maybe a bi-annual event. Now as an alumni, athletics has been my way of staying connected, but it doesn't have to be. ISU could lead the way at something entirely different than all other universities.

I would likely have very little connection left with the University to be quite honest outside of assisting my undergraduate fraternity. That isn't anything against the school, sports, especially basketball and football, just happen to be one of my passions.

There's no "cure" for the imbalance.

Does anyone SERIOUSLY believe that Alumni will travel back to the Haute to watch the 'Spring Finals'?

Gee --- imagine that... fill Tirey and the Hulman Center with Alumni, State fans and Parents to watch (via closed circuit TV) all of the students take their finals! RIVETING!!! Oooh --- that kid just snapped the lead on his LAST # 2 pencil!!!
Ohhh, that kid ran out of time to finish the LAST essay question in his World Civilization class...

The REASON colleges stage a Football game and call it Homecoming is because there's nothing REMOTELY interesting in watching kids 'perform' academics.

They don't broadcast NATIONALLY the installation of all of the University owned Andy Warhol prints and posters do they? I know they exist AND the next time I'm in the Haute and the University Art Gallery is open I'll tour them. In the meantime, here's the link:

Bear Bryant once said, "You sure as hell don't get 80,000 people in a stadium to watch kids take a test..."
