Quick question ...................I'm driving over from Indy on Saturday morning --- are they STILLl working on I - 70 over to Terre Haute ? If so will it slow me up much ?

Yes and likely yes.

I've been taking 40 over. One Saturday morning it took me 15 minutes from Plainfield to Little Point. I promptly got off at Exit 51 and headed over to 40. I think it would all depend on the time of day you travel. I was coming over around 9-10am or so.

I always say take US 40 from Indy...always. Last time I drove through there they seemed to be almost done with I-70 but you never know...

US 40 is just a better drive and it less than a 7 minute difference in drive time. More scenic, no semis, less traffic. And you come right into town on Wabash and drive right into the stadium...getting off on I-70 (especially at 41 is a nightmare typically).

Just take US 40 and save yourself the headache

I had been told both times that I had traveled to TH for the recent football games, to avoid I-70 like the plague. Each time, I checked Google Maps and it's traffic feature and it accurately said a few areas of slowdown but that was it and both times, it was quite accurate. You need to lose 5+ minutes to offset the slightly slower US 40. Neither time did I lose those 5 minutes so I-70 was the same or slightly faster. I'd check it out before you leave and also the INDOT traffic page (http://pws.trafficwise.org/ipws/ci/#) to give you an accurate look at the west side out by the airport. One thing to be watchful of. If you leave late afternoon on Friday, traffic is ALWAYS slower.

Do you do the speed limit?

last week heading to carbondale it took two hours from the airport to terre haute and that was around 9:00 am that time of day i would take 40

There seem to be multiple accidents and frequent deaths in several of those accidents almost every day & long delays for other traffic not directly involved on the I-70 section between Indy & Terre Haute blamed on everything from the failure of truck drivers in particular to slow down in construction zones, driver texting, wet roads, etc. I would avoid it even on a sunny day...........take scenic US 40 and enjoy your day.

I travel 70 daily from Terre Haute to Brazil. East bound is slowed to 45 mph from county line to at least 59. West bound same way from 59 to just past Staunton. Many times either lane is backed up to a stop for miles. I highly suggest taking 40 . What its like beyond 59 is a question I have been taking 40 to Indy all summer.

I haven't taken I-70 in years. 40 is like a private road. To avoid the Plainfield area take 74 to Lizton, 39 south to Danville, 36 west to New Winchester and 75 south to 40. Pretty good roads, easy drive--unless it is Covered Bridge Festival, then 36 has heavy traffic.

As long as you start out on the west side of Plainfield (you could take 267 south to Plainfield and then turn left on 40) you will be fine

I-70 is so bad that nearly every week there is a major accident putting people in either the hospital or the morgue. I prefer to stay alive so I drive US 40. Some of the problems could possibly be alleviated with the addition of some state troopers. These modern day tax collectors need to get back on the interstates and stay off my county road. We have deputy sheriffs for that.

Thanks for all the advice -- guess it will be US 40.

Looking forward to a great (but chilly) day and big Sycamore victory !

I always liked taking 40, but driving through Brazil will slow you down. It's obviously not as fast as 70.

I just got off 1-70 at 59 and all lanes from 59- 41 are open no traffic what so ever .They have evidently stopped all construction on 70 with the barrels on the side to be started again at a later time. Do not know if this will help anyone who has decided to come over but this is as of 9:15 am from Terre Haute to Brazil . not sure what it looks like beyond 59

I wanted to bump this topic because it looks as though most of comments are a month old.

Do any of you have current updates regarding the construction/traffic situation on I-70 westbound from Indy to Terre Haute. I'd like to go see ISU vs. ILS tomorrow, but my kid has a late morning game and I'll have to haul arse afterward just to get to Terre Haute by the start of the 2nd quarter. Is 40 still the best bet, or has I-70 cleared up? Just looking for the absolute fastest route. Thanks for any info.

Drove I-70 for the game last Saturday and had one minimal delay and probably lost 3-4 minutes or so. It takes more than 5 minutes more to take 40 so it likely will be a wash. Try Google Maps traffic. It is pretty accurate and if it shows ANY red, then go 40.

You are the most incredibly lucky person I've ever met on 70. I drove 70 last week as well and we were doing 10 mph for at least 15 minutes because a road crew was spraying new lines in one of the lanes. Either that, or I'm the most unlucky person ever. Before and after that it was smooth, but it took me 20 minutes longer than normal.
