too bad they got some of their isu facts wrong...the interview with greg gumbel...showed that he really didn't know what he was talking about......

I noticed 1-2 things but can't recall them -- however, they did make me sit up and say 'bull sh*t!'

(But then I've never like Bryant Gumbel)

Everone knows Bryant Gumbel = tool

well..they said that isu had never played in a national basketball tournament....

until bird's senior year...wrong!!!!!.....gumbel wondered aloud why michigan state didnt play a box and one against bird...his reasoning?.....because none of the other players were any good......

they seem to forget that isu beat the russian touring team in the preseason that year..with bird sitting on the bench at the end of the game...due to fouling out.....and they obviously didnt know about the bradley game when dick versace did the box and one thing.....the so-called "bird cage defense"...and isu won the game...with steve reed and carl nicks having big games.....

isu was one of only a couple college teams to beat the russians in the pre-season that year....

and Purdue !

ISU also beat Purdue at Mackey Arena that year -- I think Purdue was co-champ of the Big 10 that year.
Hey, that's the way the media, both in '79 and today, wants to play the whole thing ...........

poor little ISU -- totally untested
no one except Bird can hardly even play basketball
the MVC in those days -- podunk little conference (watch the ISU '79 NCAA games on TV and you'll hear no mention of the Missouri Valley Conference)

It made the "storyline" more interesting -- they thought

by the way

It wasn't a lack of talent that night against Michigan State -- maybe an off night for Larry and a little hesitating by the other players.
I often wonder the outcome had Steve Reed (one of the best pure shooters in the nation) had kept firing them up from outside.

and -- they always forget this -- we were only down by 5-6 pts with about 5 minutes to play and had the ball ------ hardly a blowout !

That's right TJ, and it wasn't an era of "good feelings" between the two countries during the early time of "Star Wars" missile proliferation. We boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics, which co$t ISU's Kurt Thomas million$ in endorsements given his status as the #1 men's gymnast in the World.

Just think of the "trickle down" PR residue that would've flowed to ISU had Thomas been afforded his day in the sun. Any idea what Kurt's up to now?

Several factors involved...

talent did play a role in that game; Bird and Johnson = talent,

but we didn't have many answers for Kelser and Vincent:
