The Trees begin a 10-game homestand today (3/9) against Indiana. First pitch set for 3:00 (ET).

Well, today's starter is....drum roll please...Colin Rea! Rea starting a mid-week game and starting again Friday?? Well, he'll be in there for an inning today and start off a mid-week "Johnny All Staff" journey where we'll probably see five pitchers getting time on the mound. We haven't seen Dorsett for a couple of weeks. Browning didn't pitch last weekend either.

Today's weather for the home pre-season opener is showing mostly cloudy skies and 50-degrees. Winds will be light from the WSW. A good soaking rain moved out of the area this morning, but will make for a slick outfield.

In their only head-to-head meeting last year, The Sycamores defeated Indiana at their place 17-4 on April 28th. It was one of those games where Indiana appeaered not to be even trying. That is the last thing you want to see in an opponent! ISU has beat IU in three straight contests.

IU is expected to start LHP Drew Leininger. Leininger is 0-1 in two starts (three overall appearances) with an ERA of 6.75. In 9.1 innings, he has given up 11 hits, four walks, has two wild pitches and has hit two batters. Leininger has an opposing batting average of .275.

The Hoosiers have a team batting average of .275 and are 6-4 in pre-conference play. Their offense features Alex Dickerson, who as a sophomore, was named Big 10 Player of the Year. He was Freshman of the Year in 2009. Dickerson has 39 homers in his first two years in college ball, just eight short of the Hoosier's career mark...with two seasons to go! He has "just" one HR this season. Let's hope he doesn't decide to get serious today! This pre-season's leader on offense has been Dustin DeMuth who is batting .375...followed by Wes Wilson at .346 and Alex Dickerson at .306.

Please feel free to make your comments and give some scoring updates during the game today, as I will be only checking in periodically.

Looking forward to seeing how the turnout is for our first home game and right in the middle of major excitement within ISU athletics.

Bluepower...my man...you do great great work with ISU baseball, and I realize you're location is California, but it's IU, not U of I

Thanks Quabachi! I changed that...I just like to use a variety of names in an article.

After 6.5 innings. Indiana is out in front of ISU 4-2. The Sycs have used five pitchers so far with the first three runs charged to Greg Kuhlman (making his first appearance of the year) and the fourth run was on Brandon Dorsett's watch when batter was hit by a pitch, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a single. Reggie Hochstedler brought in to get their top hitter, DeMuth to ground out to pitcher. But first, a double-steal resulted in the 5th run for Indiana. Indiana leads ISU 5-2.

Ort homered in bottom of seventh to close the score to 5-3 in favor of Indiana after seven innings

ISU has used seven pitchers...all relievers so far.

Chris Machado comes on in relief of the other seven relievers for ISU at the top of the eighth where he is perfect with a strike-out and two groundouts. 5-3, Indiana leading ISU.

With two out and an 0-2 count, Burnam doubled. ISU runners at second and third. Kraemer is up and flied out. Score still 5-3.

It'll be interesting to see if closer Tyler Browning comes in to pitch the ninth. He did not pitch at all last weekend.

Browning in to pitch top of ninth. Lead-off batter walked. Wild pitch sends runner to second. Next batter grounds out. Single scored man from second. Now 6-3 with one out. Ground out to first base. Runner advances to second with two outs. Ground out to third for third out. Score is 6-3 going into bottom of the ninth.

Ort walks...advanced to second on throwing error. Lucas grounds out. Ort to third. Wampler struck out. Two outs. Walterhouse doubled to score Ort. Peasron popped out to end game. FINAL score 6-4in favor of Indiana.

It appeared to be a respectable day for ISU. Kind of a scrimmage type practice.

Your thoughts?

Good to see so many ISU arms getting a workout...Coach Heller is obviously focusing on this aspect of conditioning, and while IU is no doubt a "rival," doesn't sacrifice seasonal goals for only 1 game. The Trees will be ready come MVC play (ex. the Dallas Baptist series, whom I still have difficulty accepting as an MVC member).

Went to the game today, neither team seemed particularly excited about the weather. The pitcher who gave up 3 runs just didn't have it today, the rest didn't look too bad.We hit a lot of fly balls, didn't really ever get much going all day.Probably a typical early season ,cold weather game.Crowd was about 200 or so I would guess, maybe a few more.

Re: the IU crowd, I imagine that most people @ ISU are on the NCAA hoop "cloud 9" now, and that few are even thinking about baseball. That's OK...once the Sycamores institute a lil' NCAA "shock treatment" on a few heavyweights, everyone will shift to the hardball bandwagon.

I hope Lucas gets better soon, this Foster Kid is terrible! Cant believe they didnt recruit someone compariable to Lucas, this kid really needs to go back to high school ball. He's going to hurt this team.:sycamores:
