The Starter Level
I was listening to John Kincade's show on ESPN Radio yesterday morning, and he mentioned Indiana State football as part of his "Pretender or Contender" segment. The question was whether ISU would post a consecutive winning season this year, and his immediate answer was contender.

I realize it's only a small thing (and most of us already believe the Trees will have another fine season), but I still thought it was nice to hear Indiana State football getting a bit of a positive shout-out on national radio.

I don't listen to ESPN radio...is John Kincade a national ESPN guy or local?

He's one of ESPN's national guys. I don't listen to him regularly, but I think he has his own Sunday morning show and acts as a fill-in when any of the "bigger" ESPN radio hosts are absent.

I actually like Kincades show when I hear it, he has solid opinions that arent the "cookie cutter" opinions that you regularly hear on some ESPN shows. One of the Few ESPN personalities that backed a few Mid majors (VCU, Butler) in the NCAA tournament.

A lot of our success last year can be attributed to our coaching staff led by coach Miles. Successful teams, i.e. contenders, are often found at schools with established coaching staffs that have been together for years. We haven't had this for years and again start another season with a lot of coaching changes. Chemistry between players and coaches is often underestimated. Hopefully, everyone is in sync and our progress continues.
We have had far too many seasons where salary budget restraints have restricted the quality of coaches in our football program and only bought us coaches who were out of their league.
I would like to believe coach Miles has the type of players now who have enough self discipline that coaching changes don't make that much difference in their performance.

I agree, the coaching staff played a big part in our success last season. I think we will win more games this year with a more experienced staff.

Coaching made a big difference when we had a team full of young players. We have junior and senior leadership now. And as long as Miles is HC, I trust we'll have a solid staff.

It's a tough job!!!!

It's very tough being a head coach at the FCS level. It's also tough for the AD...as soon as a team has success...FBS schools look at those programs and their coaches. The FCS is like a farm system for BIG D1 schools...and the pay jump is dramatic.

My point is Coach Miles is currently doing things against all odds...and the more successful the program becomes...the more vulnerable it becomes as it pertains to retaining an experienced and successful staff.

Sad, but true. You can't hold moving up against any coach.
