Guys, it's my extreme pleasure to introduce a newly formed student organization, The Larry Legend Foundation. Founded by current Indiana State student Brad Fenton, the foundation's goal is to raise funds to build a 13-foot tall Larry Bird memorial that will be placed outside of the Hulman Center.

We have created a page here on about the project as well as information on how to donate to the cause. We will work with the Foundation to keep the Project Progress Thermometer updates as people start donating. We also plan on holding several contests and raffles here on the site in the future to collect funds for this exciting project!

Brad has registered here on the site as LarryLegendFoundation and I want to thank him in advance for taking the first step in accomplishing something that many of us have talked about for years!

Jason told me about this and I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy to see this happening, and supported by students. Just a suggestion to Brad...try to find a picture of the Magic Johnson statue, so alums and the like can see what Michigan State has done for Magic.

I certainly think this will take a while...but I am personally going to try to help in anyway I can...and hope that it will happen sooner than later.

At a $20 spot, since that is the lowest denomination that the Indiana State University Foundation will accept, we need to get 6,750 people to pony up. I honestly don't think it should be that hard to find that many folks that had the priviledge to see Larry play over the course of his high school, college or professional career.

Damn I wish i had that much money where i could say if you want to donate it has to be at least $20 . I would think they would welcome any amount in todays economy . If you want to make this a community thing why not accept the little kids $5.00 he or she wants to donate . Or the Senior Citizen who can only afford $10.00. I guess i am just being Knit Picky so i will shut up about that .
With that said this is a long over due project and i am glad to see it in the works

What I really like is that I had said something about if you want to see a statue of Bird, pony up the $100,000, and this is someone actually doing something about it. A great idea whose time has come!!!

Hello all,

I would like to thank Jason for helping us spread the word about the Larry Legend Foundation. I believe that the first step to realizing our goal is getting as many people as possible behind this idea, including the student body, alumni, and fans alike. If anyone has any questions or comments please feel free to email me at [email protected] or simply post to this forum. Thanks once again to Jason for his support. I look forward to working with all you in the near future!

Sincerely,
Brad Fenton
LLF President

Great ideal and it's refreshing to see a CURRENT student is leading the charge! This is something we have all wanted for years and someone finaly stepped up to make it hopefuly happen! If they money is raised is it a gurantee State will put it up?

I could be wrong here, but if this foundation was set up with this purpose and the ISU foundation created an account for this, then the foundation (Larry Legend) can decide to do with the money whatever they want, essentially earmarking it. Now, ISU could say, "No" we won't give you permission to put it up, but I would seriously doubt it!!!

I seriously hope this was all worked out before the account was opened.

Yes, Indiana State will 100% put the statue up when the money is raised. I have talked to all of the right people, and the administration and the students are on the same page. I'm excited to see interest from alumni, with your help this project will work!!!!!!

Guys, no worries here, I ironed out all of the details with the ISU foundation. All of the money donated will go towards the cost of the statue. Once the $135,000 is raised, any excess money donated will stay in the fund and a scholarship will be created in the LLF name to an incoming freshman student each year. I am working closely with Gene Crume (president of ISU foundation) and the board of directors. All money raised will go towards the project. If any of you have any specific questions for me, you can email me at [email protected], or you can simply post your question on this forum. Thanks for your support!

With this being a student driven deal Im hoping that will cause Larry to participate. He might do it for the students even if he still is upset at the institution.

I have contacted people close with Larry Bird. When the statue is built, Larry will be there for the unveiling. I was very excited to hear that he would attend!

Is it too much to ask...

Is there any timeline on when some artist conception's/mock-ups will be available?

Is there any plan to produce/sell minitures of the statue? Maybe a 15-18 inch tall replica?
