The Blue Level
Spring Game

Is there a spring game and if so what date and what time. I can't believe that this is not publicized; do we not care or do we not have enough players to have one?

Friday night... Can't figure out what is wrong with Saturday, can't make Friday, it's like they want to keep it a secret or at least they want no one in attendance

Yeah, I'm absolutely sure that's the reasoning behind it.

Come on, guys, I live in Indianapolis, I'm not a football guy, and I knew the date of the Spring Game months ago. You don't have to look too hard. Seriously...

I have heard that this new staff doesn't like people attending practice and prefer to do everything behind "closed doors", so I'm sure part of that did play into the 5:00 Friday night Spring Game.

The Indiana State football team will wrap up spring practice with its annual Blue/White game at Memorial Stadium on Friday. The scrimmage is set for 5 p.m. ET.

I think it should be on a Saturday, but I don't know how much I believe rumors like this. It's becoming clear that a lot of people in TH don't like Sanford (not local, the Bell situation, losing last year) and as a result there seems to be a lot of pointless negativity toward him and the coaching staff. It hurts the program and the university.

Isn't this normally held on a Saturday? Seems like that would better serve fans.

What fans? To be quite blunt, so few fans show up for the Spring game that the date/time is negligible at best. Further, they're holding their annual golf outing (sic: fundraiser) on Saturday so it probably makes 100 times more sense to focus on the event that may actually make the program some money.

Fans need to start showing up to the games in numbers before the school starts catering to them on novelty stuff like the spring game.

I definitely feel like they want stuff behind closed doors as well but I don't think that jives with the Spring Game because usually there is nothing going on there -- it's just a vanilla pitch and catch usually. I just made mention to their fundraiser which is the main reason it was moved to a Friday.

Totally agree. Saw some comments from a former player (I think) on Tom Jame's Facebook wall that support this hypothesis. The sad thing here is the football program could very well be on the chopping block if some of these crazy NCAA changes come to pass.

More ISU bullshit. Self-loathing graduates/alumni who just cannot come up with anything positive about their school/team. Oh yeah, and he's not Trent Miles. Trent Miles is a GOD. Well, guess what folks? Trent Miles recruited the program into the ground with awful classes the last couple of years. People were on Sanford's ass before we'd played a game. Typical.

My guess is the Friday choice for the spring game was driven by the fact the football golf outing is scheduled for all day Saturday the 26th. Last year it was flip-flopped with the golf outing being held the day before and the game being held on Saturday afternoon. Frankly I'm not sure who controls the scheduling of events like individual sports fundraisers. I would suspect the AD/the AD's staff had something to do with scheduling of the outing. There will also be a dinner following the spring game for football program supporters and players, enabling career counseling and networking.

I will be attending the game and the other events so I'll throw a couple comments on the game, the dinner and the outing on this thread some time early next week.

One thing you can count on, I won't be talking about my golf game. I'm a real hacker. Any insight on the Hulman course would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate what Miles, Bell and those teams did, but truth is, they didn't turn the program around for good. All they gave us were a few winning seasons that fell short of even making the playoffs. Folks better get behind Sanford because if his teams don't win, he might very well be the last football coach at ISU.

No doubt of that is my mind. I give Trent Miles all of the credit for a temporary turn aroud and all of the credit for our current state of failure. I hope that Sanford can right the ship before it goes down for the last time. We know there have been good basketball programs with impressive records and budgets at schools that don't play football. I just hope we get it turned around and going in the right direction for more that a couple of years. We know what a couple of years of success followed by a couple of years of bad recruiting and a late season coacing change can do.

Good points all. The golf outing on Saturday probably does make more sense - in the end is rather have the event that people pay for on a day when the majority can make it so that more money is going into the program. And I wasn't meaning to be negative about Coach, just pointing out what my brother on the team said about his philosophy on having fans at practice.

March of Dimes walk on Saturday at the stadium.

As far as the secrecy goes, I'm not sure why they don't promote it more than a blip on the website. Growing up in bloomington, even with their reletively bad teams there was still talk of the cream and crimson game each spring. I know a lot of people like to pay a lot of money to play golf. I've never played so I don't understand the intrigue. I think I would rather pay money to watch a sporting event than to chase a little ball all over the pasture.

The new staff seems to be paranoid. When you have a season like last year I guess it is human nature but I would guess one more season like last year will be the end of this staff. It is difficult taking over for a hometown guy who turned around a program that was the laughing stock of 1-AA to at least an above average program. They have circled the wagons and are going to give it their best effort. One question to anyone who has seen practice. Are they giving Landcaster any more reps at QB then they did last year?

I think the new kids on the block will have at least 2 and more than likely 3 years to demonstrate improvement. This is the first recruiting class for them, and Miles did a bad job of recruiting his last 2 years. You will never convince me that the realization of the ability of last year's team was not a big factor in this decision to leave.

It's not that I am belittling Miles. I was a big fan and supporter.

Simply put, he saw what he had recruited, and got out while the getting was good...

Miles did great recruiting when he could offer kids plenty of early playing time. When that was no longer available, we struggled to recruit. I hope Sanford doesn't eventually run into the same problem, but I'll just taking winning for now. I think Miles and his staff also clearly missed on some guys. Tonyan at QB being the most obvious example.
