Light snow showers this morning in Champaign will leave a dusting of snow on the field and the temperature at gametime (4:00 ET) is expected to be a verrrry chilly 39-degrees with light winds from the northeast (wind chill temp of 35). The temp for Saturday is about 40 as well. Ditto for Sunday! Gloves and hand warmers will be the order for the weekend. Not a great home-field debut for The Fighting Illini!

ISU's early season standout Colin Rea (4-1, 3.89 ERA) takes to the mound on a day when pitching is a little tougher...but the plight of the batter is also a factor as it is tougher to hit in conditions like this. The Fighting Illini will send sophomore RHP Kevin Johnson (1-3, 2.30 ERA) to the hill. Johnson's won-loss numbers are decptive, as he has pitched 31.1 innings, giving up 17 runs--but only eight were earned. He has given up nine walks, hit two batters and has fanned 25. If Johnson has a good game and his defense supports his efforts, this could be a tough game.

Illinois opens their 2011 home schedule this weekend, as all 16 games that the Illini have played so far have taken place away from home. UI brings a 6-10 record into the weekend series, going 4-4 in true road games and 2-6 at neutral sites. The Illini have won two straight games, topping Saint Louis, 7-4, and Southern Illinois, 8-2 in 12 innings, this past weekend in Carbondale. The wins snapped a stretch where UI had lost eight out of nine games overall.

As a team, UI is hitting .262 this season while their pitching rotation checks in with an 4.67 team ERA. Individually, the Illini are led by sophomore Davis Hendrickson, who brings a .357 (20-for-56) batting average into the weekend. Junior Josh Parr tops the Illinois roster with 23 hits in 71 trips to the plate (.324average), while senior Casey McMurray leads the team with 13 RBIs.

Today's game should be more of a challenge than ISU has seen in the past two weeks. I would place Illinois as a mid-level MVC equivilent. And, add in the cold weather and we'll further separate the men from the boys!

Today's game will be carried on-line through WISU, through Twitter and live stats service is available.

It appears that the Illini are posing some stiff competition. That is good. That's what we need in pre-conference play. The good news is that we have the ability to stay with them step by step and then come out the winner. Go Trees!

With two outs in top of fifth...Kraemer walks...Ort bunt single...wild pitch advances runners...Walterhouse singles to plate two runs. Score 4-3 in favor of Illinois.

Rea still on mound in bottom of fifth...hits first batter...walks second...next two fly out...runners hold...batter grounds out. Still 4-3.

Kudos to Hochstedler. In the pre-conference play he has shown he's very effective in pitching multiple innings...about the best in the past couple of years.

Bottom of ninth...Machado going for save, with Flora and Merkley in the pen...first batter walks...batter sac bunts runner to second...batter K's swinging but gets to first on passed ball, runner advances to third...just one out...Brandon Flora on to pitch for Machado...Flora has been extemely effective thus far this year as a lefty specialist...batter singles to right, run scores...Machado charged with run...6-6 with runners at first and second with one out...Merkley on to pitch for Flora...next batter gounds out to third, runners advance to second and third...two outs...next batter walks to load bases...another walk brings in the winning run...Illinois wins 7-6.

Well, pitching in the ninth, three errors and free bags did the Sycamores in today against a tougher team than they have faced in a couple of weeks in frigid weather to boot.

Six runs on nine hits and three errors for ISU. Two IU runs were unearned.

Seven runs on nine hits and no errors for IU.

Hedges went three for for and scored a run.

Walterhouse was one for five, but had two RBI's.

Ort was one for four and had an RBI and a run.

Hileman was two for four with two RBI's and a run.

Kraemer was one for four with a run scored.

Coach Heller spared no punches in the above video...clearly disappointed. He said the pitching was poor all the way around. I would have to say that Hochstedler did look pretty good for two innings. And, while he did give up three earned runs in the third, Rea only gave up four hits...but gave up three walks in five innings and had three errors behind him.

This unit needs to pull everything together in order to win this weekend. This team is better than ones they've faced recently.
