DBU's DOWN this year...missing those STUDS in the lineup that would always kill ya. They're NOT the DBU of past, that's for sure. If our pitchers are on top of their game, we can take this series.
BTW, keep in mind that in the SIU 0-0 Game #3 tie late into the 7th inning, it was the SMALL BALL game that got the ball rolling! I'm worn out from emphasizing this in COLLEGE baseball, where the IF gets a "little stale" after a few innings (especially during a PITCHER'S DUEL). Let's just hope that Coach Hannahs keeps this "card" accessible in these games. Also, ISU needs to keep either Geisler or Dungan @ 3B and DRILL 'EM on bunt situations, because I can GUARANTEE that we'll see this strategy DOWN THE STRETCH, as it separates "the men from the boyz"...the ability to make KEY defensive plays in the CLUTCH.
As far as Bifano, he needs to get his head straight whenever PITCHING CHANGES are made, adapting his style behind the plate w/ the "character" of pitches being thrown by the relievers. I don't how many times I've seen him with his glove in an awkward receiving position, fumbling the pitch that should've been caught and allowing runners to advance. The WORST I've seen @ ISU in years...and a BIG LIABILITY to the success of ISU's defense.
A little suggestion...ALWAYS have a pitcher/catcher conference AFTER throwing your warmups (does Bifano speak GOOD English?). Talk about # of outs, score of the game, forthcoming batters (start, middle, last) and have the P remind the catcher of his KEY PITCHES (so he won't be surprised when it "breaks a mile" INSIDE or OUTSIDE). There's no doubt in my mind, that ISU's battery are not on the "same page" 30% of the time.
