INDIANA STATE RECEIVES SIGNED LETTER OF NATIONAL OF INTENT FROM JAKE KITCHELL

Kitchell Is Third To Sign With Sycamores This Fall

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State basketball head coach Kevin McKenna announced this afternoon that the Sycamore coaching staff received its third signed letter of national intent of the fall. Jake Kitchell signed on the dotted line earlier today and is third member of the 2009 fall signing class for the Sycamores.

Kitchell is a 6-9, 225, power forward from Union Mills, Ind., and played for coach John Steinhilber at South Central High School. Kitchell averaged 20 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and six blocks per game for a team that finished the 2008-09 season with a record of 17-5. He is expected to be a first team all-state selection later this month in the upcoming edition of the annual Hoosier Basketball Magazine. He was a member of the Indiana Junior All-Stars last spring.

“Jake Kitchell is a inside/outside post player that will remind those that watch our games of Jay Tunnell,” McKenna commented. “He is a tough, physical player that can shoot from the perimeter well. He comes from both a winning high school and AAU program (SYF). He has put up some big numbers in several categories and we are looking forward to having him join the program next season.”

Kitchell joins Steve McWhorter and Myles Walker who signed with the program yesterday on the first day of the NCAA Early Signing Period. The Sycamores were a perfect 3-for-3 during offseason recruiting as Indiana State secured signed letters of intent from all three prospective student-athletes that took official visits to campus.

The Sycamores open the 2009-10 slate on Friday, November 13 against Nebraska-Kearney. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. (ET).

This can't nean we only had 3 players visit?

Why the concern??

Was there any threat of him changing his mind? He verballed late didn't he? Course, you never know until you know but I wasn't worried about Kitchell

K-Mac mentioned the possibility of Tunnell returning to ISU next year to complete his Masters Degree. Wonder if he plans on using Jay as a Grad Asst w/ focus on Kitchell and the 6'8" Myles Walker -"Texas Ranger?"

McKenna did say at the Beef O Brady lunch today that they did only have 3 in on official visit. An official visit is where the school acutally pays the way for the potential recruit to drive/fly to campus, house them, feed them, etc. while they are here. I know there were other unofficial visits where prospects pay there own way. When you are recuriting kids from Texas and possibly Wisconsin it would make sense to make those official visits because of the distance instead of someone closer such as Indy or Chicago.

Yeah, it was just relief. When the the other two LOI's were received on Wednesday and Kitchell's was not, middle-aged paranoia kicked in....

I think each kid is allowed 5 visits, so by pure arithmetic a school would need to have 15 prospects in to fill 3 spots. I hope that doesn't mean they could only get 3 to visit. The school would want as many as possible to visit to have a chance at better players.

ISU wanted to have him sign on Tuesday as well but Jake's dad couldn't be there so they reschduled for Wednesday. No need to worry!

He'd be nuts NOT to use Tunnell -- the question will be if Tunnell has any interest or how much time he'll need to devote to grad school.

The best thing about all this is that it sounds like Coach McKenna is getting better quality recruits than what several of his predecessors did. How many Indiana all-state players have we had in the past 20 years? These are the types who didn't even consider ISU. This is where games are won and lost. Getting these guys translates to wins.

Absolutely; the only indiana colleges I 'expect' to lose recruits to are iu and purdue; but losing kids to buttler, isum, valpo, nd, ipfw, iupui or ue...unacceptable.
