During the Alabama vs Illinois NIT game tonight, they showed coaches as possible replacements for Anthony Grant (who was fired as the Alabama head coach two days ago).

Well, Greg Lansing was mentioned as a potential replacement. His picture and head coaching record was shown during the broadcast. I was at a bar, so I didn't hear the audio. But sure as shit, there was Lansing's picture with other candidates as potential replacements for Alabama. Roll Tide.

Man oh man, I hope not.

And incidentally, I feel for Anthony Grant. Prior to Grant, Alabama had not been to the NCAA tourney since 2006. "Grant's Alabama teams went 117-85 (.579), including two NIT appearances (2011 and 2013) and one NCAA appearance (2012)." And tonight, they destroyed Illinois in their first round NIT game. It's hard out there for a D-1 SEC bball coach.

Bobby Hurley is going to be a very hot name after this season. He has done a very good job at Buffalo. Not sure how much longer they will be able to hold on to him.

just out of curiosity, who is "sean" because at the top of the screen shot it says "sean's coaching candidates"

Although I don't think Lansing gets offered or takes the Alabama job, we all need to be ready for his name to start popping up more often. He'd probably be the fifth choice among those listed by "Sean," but this won't be the last time we see his name rumored. For now, this is just speculation on the part of the color analyst but we might as well get used to it.

Anthony Grant is a very good coach and actually had a higher winning percentage at Alabama than Lansing does at ISU. I doubt the boosters and decision makers at be will take a guy from a mid-major with a .569 winning percentage unless we were coming off of a major run in the NCAA tournament.

Would Coach Lansing have the same success at 'Bama that Coach R. Ray is having at Miss State?

Was listening to ESPN 1000 Chicago a couple days ago. They were talking about Hurley being the savior for DePaul. Haven't been paying much attention recently. Has the Demons coach been fired?

He resigned. Wow, the Blue Demons really soak up the press up there, don't they?

Are you meaning a sizable income boost opportunity to coach in the SEC ? Makes it easier to build a team and if it doesn't work, oh well?

If we're honest with ourselves, Lansing is eventually going to be snapped up. There are few guys in the country that does more with so few resources and you can damn well bet other athletic directors are well aware of that.

All 5 candidates on that list will be mentioned ad nauseam over the next several years.

Other than uk, which $EC team REALLY, REALLY cares about basketball?

Glad to see R. Ray got a HC gig and at a big school --- BUT if push comes to shove, is Miss St going to give him $$ or the football team? I'd bet money on the football team receiving it.

Same with Alabama...

I HOPE we don't lose Coach Lansing; but I won't be shocked if we do. IF we lose him, in the future, I am confident, it'll be to a 'better job.'

There's been some speculation that Fred "The Mayor" Hoiberg will NOT be at Ames long term... IF that 'isu' job became available & they wanted him... I don't think we could keep him in The Haute.

Grant made $1.9m at Alabama this year. I believe he had 4 years left on his deal and he'd make $1m/year not to coach on his buyout. Lansing, by comparison, makes $260k/year. If you sign a 5 year deal you net $9.5m and then get canned or $1.3m here over the same period. What coach wouldn't take that as he'd never have to work again if he managed his money right.

As for Hoiberg, rumors out of Chicago is that the Bulls will fire Thibs this Summer and Hoiberg is their #1 priority to replace him.

I'm guessing Lansing will be among those candidates shown in numerous graphics about potential coaching replacements. It doesn't mean he or that school have expressed mutual interest, it's just because our program has done well with limited resources. He's a guy schools will look at.

Hoiberg pretty much has the T-Wolves job anytime he wants it, too. Flip Saunders is just keeping that seat warm. Since Flip is the GM and the head coach, he can pretty easily replace himself with Hoiberg whenever Hoiberg is ready. They love The Mayor in Minneapolis.

RP's coaches have a tendency to leave him in a situation where he has no choice but to hire their top assistant. That would be a travesty if it happened again...

Agree with the $$$ aspect BUT how many coaches 'get into Div I' coaching for the big $$ contract and then never go back to coaching?

Sure there are some that get burnt out, find the desk/studio analyst gig is better than coaching; see Gruden, Jon

Is Lansing of that type? Dunno.

I DO know that virtually no one in the SR Admin ranks at State will be shocked IF they lose him to a bigger school (P5)... but I seriously doubt he'll move to a lateral position...

Such is life at a mid-major w/ a coach as young and successful as Lansing...

We knew the odds of Waltman moving to bigger school weren't that high; he was 55 when we hired him... whereas Lansing got the Head Coaching job at 43...
