TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State swingman Dwayne Lathan has been suspended by the NCAA for the first two games of the season.

Lathan, who transferred to ISU from Louisiana Tech in 2008, participated in an unsanctioned 3-on-3 charity basketball event while he was still a student at Louisiana Tech in April 2008.

ISU became aware of Lathan's participation recently and self-reported to the NCAA. Lathan was suspended for each game he took part in during the charity tournament.

The bad thing about this situation is that is was a charity event and there was no money prizes or anything.

well this really sucks. I think his athletic ability will be missed against LSU. Lathan, marshall, and kelly on the floor at the same time this year will be hard for any team to stop

Yeah this sucks. The NCAA has no soul whatsoever. It was a charity event. Yes, Lathan should have told them but wow, c'mon...sigh...he was our best player in the preseason in my opinion so this really hurts.

I am not sold that he was the best player in pre season - he might have been the best athlete on the floor in both games, no real question about that. But was he the best all around player? Doubtful. I would say Jake Kelly and then Harry Marshall and then Lathan in that order - but these guys are all going to have to function as one if we are going to do anything this year. No more of this Kelly is better than Harry but Harry is better than Lathan but Lathan is more athletic than all of them stuff... Because at the end of the day who really cares if you don't win ball games?

Just so you guys are aware - Lathan was not the only one that played in this 3 on 3 tourney. Jeff Jordan (son of MJ) is currently serving a 2 game suspension for playing in that same 3 on 3 tourney....

So contrary to popular belief, the NCAA is not picking on the Sycamores, nor is this team cursed!

I just hope he serves his 2-game suspension without getting in any more trouble. We will surely miss him in Friday's game and with the LSU game. I hope he is still hot when he comes back so we can see some monstrous dunks by him on Sportscenter the next day after the 2nd NIT game.

I agree with both points. Lathan was definitely not our best player in those games AND it doesn't matter.

This clearly isn't a anti-ISU move or anything like that by the NCAA. He broke the rules (even though I think the rule is insane) and now he has to pay for it. He's clearly the most atletic player on the team and maybe the most athletic Sycamore in many, many years but in our two preseason games he hasn't be the best player on the court. He'll definatley be missed against LSU but hopefuly someone else will step up.

Me saying Lathan was our best player in the preseason has nothing to do with the dunks. A dunk is still 2 points no matter how hard you throw it down. He was creating turnouvers on defense, getting hot from 3 point land, and in general doing an awesome job fitting in with our offense despite the fact that it was his first two games in the royal blue.
