The Varsity Level
We’ve talked about a lot of things this week and I thought we needed to stop and recognize these greats seniors who most likely will be playing their last home football game at Memorial Stadium.
Some of these young men are fifth year seniors and experienced a no-win season their freshmen year. The four year seniors, who my son came in with, made the decision to attend this University and be part of the football program despite it having the longest losing streak in the nation and despite a locker facility that looked, well let’s just say it wasn’t very appealing.
Why would anyone have wanted to be a part of that mess…well, let me mention a few reasons…it started with a passionate man who had a vision and a strong desire. Say what you want about Coach Miles, but he sold this program and he made people believe. He recruited these graduating seniors because they were good young men…in and out of the classroom. He recruited these young men because they had a history of making good decisions in high school and who were from high school programs that expected hard work and dedication. He recruited young who knew how to win and who were not going to be satisfied losing…NOTHING was going to stop these young men from winning. They are part of one of the biggest program turnarounds ever…and that’s what they all set out to be a part of. More importantly, they will succeed after football and be great husbands, fathers and community leaders.
Sunday will be a very emotionally day, for all of us…even if we’re blessed to have a kid playing another year. I just want to say thank you to all of those great young men playing their last season here at ISU, thank you for the memories. And for their parents, I’m not looking forward to it next year because I’m an emotional mess right now…but beside your young men, this weekend is about all about you. It will be a hard day for you but we’ve got a lot of football ahead of us this year! I love you all and wish you blessings and Godspeed.
