Why Not Us?
Forget the new stadium; instead of $30MM on a stadium, negotiate a deal with Lucas Oil Stadium. Independent or join the MAC. Take the game to the concentration of Alums around Indy. I expect more ISU students and local fans would make a trip to Indy for a Saturday in Indy than will make the trip to Memorial Stadium. Work in home games as best we can with schools that will get us over the required minimum: Louisville, Cincinnati?, ideally some Big 10 schools who can play us since we exit FCS. There might be a couple that would play us just to get a game in Lucas Oil Stadium to get comfortable with it for the Big 10 Title.

Sweet. Did you cut the $5 million dollar check? If not, please start here:

Do not pass go. Do donate $200 to the Sycamore Athletic Foundation.

so you prefer spending $30MM to build a stadium no one will use continuing the same 'strategy' that got us into this fix???? If you have a criticism, at least engage your brain for a few seconds and formulate a reasoned reply.

There will not be any new stadium. I've consulted with my brain on this one, my brain agrees.

And since my reply was a tad snarky, I will also say this.....the Mallory hire is awesome. He's got me believing he'll be successful as a head coach. But any success he brings us will be fleeting....meaning he'll be gone once a better job comes along, and that'll prob be pretty soon.

Jason has outlined it incredibly clearly, in multiple threads....it ALL comes down to the dollars ISU doesn't have and funding that isn't coming in from "donors" (lack of donors).

Viva la dropping football and investing in basketball.

This board is doing a incredible job of undermining the football program, with the fans like this we don't need enemies. How does more dollars automatically equate to more wins? There are 207 basketball programs better funded than us and the vast majority of them suck. The administration obviously made a decision to invest in football (look at the coaching staff) and I believe we should support them for taking on this endeavor.

How does more money equate to wins?

  • Being able to pay coaches and staff members more - This leads to getting more quality candidates and having them stick around. This leads to program stability.
  • Being able to pay for games - Ever wonder why teams like Montana, North Dakota State and the other traditional FCS powers can get mid-level FCS schools to come to their place? It isn't on their good looks.
  • Being able to recruit on a wider scale. Sending your coaches around the country costs money. We've had previous coaches that had to pay for their own rental cars or had reimbursements declined while on recruiting trips.
  • Staying with recruiting, being able to upgrade facilities such as locker rooms, training rooms and weight rooms. This leads to bigger recruits believing we can possibly get them to the next level as opposed to the rusty shower stalls we used to have that had prospects running out the door.
  • On player development, being able to offer FCOA, medical coverage and training tables. Making sure athletes have everything taken care of so they can focus on academics and their sport.
  • Even more for players... that swaaag life. Look at how players eat up jersey/helmet combos and other gear.
  • Ever wonder why you don't see sycamore football billboards or commercials?
  • Being able to fly instead of bussing like the bigger programs do.
I'm sure I could come up with a ton of other items if I really thought about it. Bottom line is, nobody is undermining the football program. We're calling a spade, a spade. I'm going to do the same thing to you now that I've asked everyone else. Have you opened your wallet and make a donation to the football program? If not, why not? That's undermining the program that you know has financial issues.

Just to get back to the "Why Not Us" comment for a bit.

I asked Northview's AD what the WIC multi-game day at Lucas Oil cost. He said the price has been raised to $180K for the big long day it takes to play the entire series. They decided the conference could not afford that number once every 4 years.

I came across another article in the Indy Paper from 2011 when the cost was $75K I think. Said the Board needs to take in $3.5MM/year from "Non-Colts activities) and the Colts put in $3.5MM/year (I am old school: M = 1,000 in my book). They barely meet the outside revenue target. I expect they might negotiate on a 5-6 weekend deal.

The HS Conference that played in 2011 signed a deal with a marketing firm which limited both risk and profits. The marketing firm then sold sponsorships and net result was the schools made some money w/minimal risk of being obligated to sell X tickets and the marketing firm probably made a nice profit.

Now with Lucas Oil Stadium's color scheme a perfect match for ISU it seems to be begging for us to find the right path to use it. Even if in the worst case we were still FCS, it still looks like a better option than even thinking about a new stadium. The interest on $30MM would be that range and we would not have the staffing and maintenance issues with which to wrestle.

Basically $1.0-1.2 MM/year to become Indy's D1 Football program. If we go FBS, add another $1MM for scholarship costs.

To cut that cost, sell corporate sponsorships or go the marketing company route. Have Metro Indy HS days. Tie in a HS Marching Band Contest: They would kill to get into Lucas Oil Stadium before State Finals. Get some kind of deal with someone like Louisville, Cinti, UT maybe where they pocket most of the money but we get say $250-$300 K for the day on a home game. Just some 5 minutes of thoughts; gotta go to a meeting.
