Baseball Mod
Sycamore ace Sean Manaea had a less than stellar year due to injuries and the latest blow--the shoulder tightness that scratched him from the entire MVC Tournament. If Manaea can't quickly do some miraculous exhibitions for scouts and execs before the June MLB draft, his liklihood of going high in the draft is going to be diminished. We have already seen a few MLB blogs this week addressing this issue. Naturally, we are not hearing the full news on what's wrong with his shoulder. Perhaps that is because he has not had an MRI yet. Perhaps he'll head to Indy to do that this coming week.

What are your thoughts.

I think Manaea is less concerned about how high he gets drafted than we are. I'll be the first to admit that I hope he's one of the first picks of the draft....and since at one point he was being touted as the possible number one, I still have a tiny glimmer of hope that that happens. But Manaea seems to be incredibly laid back so I think he'll just be thrilled to be drafted, no matter where in the order.

With that said, yes it seems like that last injury could drop him in the order, but I bet he's still a first rounder.

I think he's at best a 3rd rounder...if he was smart, he'd finish his degree, layoff of playing Summer ball & heal the tendonitis (my I-net assessment of his injury). If he's got the stuff for MLB, it's not gonna disappear in a year, and by coming on strong for ISU NEXT year, he'll no doubt gather the fiscal benefit of showing PATIENCE in his life.

No way Jose. He will still get drafted high enough to command good money. One good thing vs the NFL or NBA draft is that he doesn't have to declare and forfeit his college eligiblity (unless he has already done that by hiring an agent ????). Almost all, if not all, junior draftees get the "finish the degree" clause written into their contract if they so desire. I'm sure his medical condition will be evaluated before the draft. Still a first rounder unless he is deemed "crippled from baseball for life".

One Summer in the Cape Cod League does not = 4 yrs. of ACC/SEC ball...too many quality products reflecting durability ahead of him. We'll see...I'd draft the kid from THN playing @ UK BEFORE Manaea. How many innings did Manaea get this Spring...73?

Probably our difference of opinion is why you & I don't scout for any MLB clubs? The people that do this for a living are most likely more qualified than us? Re-read my comment above............."He will still get drafted high enough to command good money." That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

Totally agree. Everything I have read puts him 10th to 15th pick overall. Personal opinion, he signs and is not a Sycamore next year.

You're partly right, but I've come in contact w/ "scouts" here in FL over the years (AAU/HS ball) that have no clue. You can look @ MLB standings over years and see who have the best "scouts" & minor league programs.

Ask Don Mattingly about the "big buck" athletes and building a winner in MLB...

I think at the earliest he gets get by the Pirates with their second first round pick at number 14 (Hope I'm wrong!).
Remember Mark Appel was picked 8th overall and did not sign with Scott Boras as his adviser. This could become a similar situation with Manaea slipping and teams may stay away until later in the first round.

No way the best lefty arm in college baseball falls out of the first round, unless his injury is worse than just a shoulder strain.

You are talking about AJ Reed who played for THS not THN. Yhe problem with that is I dont think he can be drafted until next year he just finished up he Sophmore season . As well as he cannot figure out if he wants to Hit or Pitch at some point he is going to have to decide.

Yep, that's him...

He got banged around this year in the SEC...I'd put him @ 1B/OF to use his stick. He's a BIG boy...Dizzy Dean used to say, "He's got POWER to BURN."

I tuned in late & was watching the Cubs @ Cincy Friday and saw Feldman's HR. That boy's got a stroke! He fouled off 4 or 5 pitches before his clout...hell, I didn't know he was a P until after the HR!

There may be a few (?) that doubt his status as "the best LHP." Look @ Nick Petree's career over @ Missouri State.

Manaea is the better pro prospect no doubt. There is lots of chatter back home that Petree will be gone, since he has already graduated. With that said I strongly disagree Manaea is the best left-hander in baseball.

Curious...did ISU get an MRI of Manaea's shoulder after he complained of "discomfort?" You would've thought that given the pre-season status & hype surrounding Manaea that ANY threatening ailments would've been thoroughly examined by med tech's latest tools of the trade.

Why bring this up? Well frankly, given the forthcoming MLB draft, and the fact of Manaea's less than stellar ISU season w/ surrounding physical problems, coupled w/ the manipulative "nature" of agents, I just wonder if $$$ "damage control" was in action here?

Gotta wonder if pitching with the hip problem all season didn't get Sean all out of whack and caused the arm trouble. Good luck to him, being a lefty will get him as many chances as anyone could hope for no matter where he's drafted at.

What college lefty is a better pro prospect than Manaea? Marco Gonzales? I agree they are closer now with the injury.

I don't know that there is a better pro prospect than Manaea. I was simply saying in my opinion Petree is a better pitcher today. As he has been thought his college career.

I like this assessment of Petree's ability:

http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2...0-college-pitchers-heading-into-spring-21-30/

Manaea only has 3 mph of velocity on him...and not nearly the arsenal/mixture of pitches. Petree has also show DURABILITY, which helps the investment while in the "developmental stages" of minor league ball.

Great article about WHY some coaches let catchers call the PITCHES:

note: This kid's got a nice athletic name!

Latest MLB mock draft from Bleacher Report (5/29/13) has Manaea dropping possible to second round due to injuries and a fastball that has fallen into the low 90's:

22. Baltimore Orioles: Sean Manaea, LHP, Indiana State

For a pitcher who could have been a top-10 pick, Sean Manaea's slide down draft boards has been an interesting thing to watch.

Folks came away enamored with the lefty after he ascended at Cape Cod a year ago, but the luster wore off a bit down the stretch. He's back down to being consistently in the low-90s rather than the mids, a key downfall for scouts. It's amazing what a couple downticks on the radar gun will do for a prospect, especially one that's now dealing with the aforementioned injury issues.

It's possible that he now slides out of Round 1, which seemed unthinkable a couple months ago. But for now, let's stick him with pitching-needy Baltimore based on potential alone.
