Vastly improved over last year. Very impressive look and performance. Kudos to all who have contributed to the upgrade.

I agree. Of course you go to a ballgame to watch the game but you notice other things as well. The two biggest improvements were the student section and the band. Love the sycamore covers on the tubas.

FYI, a member from the band reached out to me in the middle of August but I just saw the message the other day. The band was trying to raise additional funds for expansion and I invited them to come post on here as I know a lot of you have a fondness for them. Hopefully they take me up on it.

They were great -- very impressive improvement. Loved their energy, sounded great, marched well.

Only thing I wish they would do is establish a tradition of pre-game marching outside the stadium. Marching through the tailgate area at every game should be done, stopping 3-4 times to play. They do this thru Test City at Homecoming but it should be done every game. Hell maybe march through campus and hour or two before kickoff.... kinda of a "its game day -- get off your butts and out to the stadium" thing.

Was at Notre Dame Saturday for first Irish game I'd ever seen. Tradition rich is all I can say. Thousands at the pre-game concert near the Golden Dome and lining the band's parade route to the stadium. I know ...I know ISU is a different animal, but we still need traditions that excite fans and build loyalty.

Purdue does a similar type thing pre-game -- marching through campus and into the stadium.

The band should establish a regular pattern of outside the stadium performance and marching.

And keep growing those numbers -- congratulations to all who had a hand in making this tihing grow !

I attend most games and the band has always gone thru the parking lot when I have attended but for some reason, they did not Thursday night. I agree, it is a great tradition and I love to send their "personal" serenade out onto Facebook. My alum friends love it. I hope the 180-member band doesn't think they are too many people to trek thru the stadium lot. I sat near the band last week and should have asked why they skipped it this week. Hopefully it was just the timing of the game and not everyone could get to the stadium in time.

I still get chills when the team comes out to the band playing March On. Id probably have tears if they also shot a cannon to start it.

nothing better than the atmosphere of a college game with a marching band.

Hello - that was me!

To clarify a bit - I graduated in '13 with a music ed degree and am now directing a high school band in south-central Indiana. While I was at State, I was a member of the Marching Sycamores, Basketball Band, and all three concert bands. I was also a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, a fraternity dedicated to serving the university bands.

The ISUMS started this season needing a fifth set of tenor drums. As the article mentions, the university provided quite a lot to the band this fall, but they were not expecting so many people to actually show up - typically, there are more no-shows. Because of the explosive growth, the band needed a fifth set of tenor drums which costs about $1,200 when you factor in the instrument, stadium stands, and other equipment necessary to last the season. We hit our initial goal of buying a new set of drums, and extended the campaign to raise funds to replace cymbals and to take care of other needs.

The campaign ended, but if there's interest among folks here in closing the gap between our amount raised and the goal (we fell just $315 short of the second goal) then we can make something work.

I was one who happily contributed to the fund raising efforts, and was so happy to see the band at the first game. It was great, keep it up
.
