I realize that this is not the place to discuss the Knights...and I am not trying to do so. But just wondered if you all knew that the coach of the Marian Knights for the past 34 years has been John Grimes of Terre Haute (Gerstmeyer) and he graduated from ISU, playing tight end for the Sycamores Football team. . http://www.muknights.com/coach/7/1.php his profile talks about his time at ISU.

I thought that was very interesting, since I have know Coach Grimes for virtually my entire life and had no idea that he went to ISU, was from Terre Haute or anything like that. So, an alumnus that has accomplished a great deal as the coach of Marian with over 500 wins (closer to 600 now I beleive) and many championships.

Interesting...

- that he played college football yet becomes a career basketball coach

- that you've known him forever, yet he never shared nor did you know he was a State alumnus (x2)

- that he's not in the State Hall of Fame

- couldn't find his season by season record(s); though as he passed 500 wins 2 seasons ago, he's still closer to 500 than 600

- that he hasn't left for a bigger school / job

- that State has the best NAIA Tournament record of all Indiana schools

- that Marian hasn't accomplished more in the NAIA Tournament

Sounds like a coach that Indiana State should have looked at before hiring Royce Waltman. I have been to Marian on a college visit, but I never knew that Grimes was from my hometown, and he was my tour guide, he was a nice guy who knew a lot about the campus and the traditions there. He sounds like a nice fit for Marian College.

All good points...I think he hasn't left because he has such a good gig at Marian and I am speculating but the catholic piece probably has something to do with it.

Grimes is a rpoud ISU football alumnus

He receives our Indiana State Football Alumni newsletter and has written me recently abut his appreciation for receiving the newsletter....he has also written me on different issues that have come up the last couple of years concerning isu athletics in general and the football program in particular....

by the way, I believe that he was a quarterback at Indiana State. He is a close friend of retired Terre Haute Tribune-Star sports editor Tom Reck. The Recdkmeister covered him at ISU.

His brother Ron also played football for the Sycamores--a DB if I remember correctly. Ron is also a pretty good HS official. I talked very briefly with him at a HS basketball game last season. Both were good guys IIRC.

I officiated a few IHSAA games w/ Ron while teaching @ Bedford during the early 80's...funny, but I'm a NTH native & parents lived across from the old Gerstmeyer gym on 1st Ave, but never did Grimes & I talk about our TH roots!
Ron was teaching @ Mitchell, where former early 70's ISU guard Steve Phillips (Plymouth) is Supt.

I recall John Grimes during his early 60's Black Cat dayz...I'm pretty sure that Grimes was a lineman, not QB. Louie Lawson was their QB.

heck of a jump from NAIA to Missouri Valley -- Waltman was a success at each coaching stop (HS, Big Ten ass't, Div III, Div II and Div I)

I don't see anyway that ISU could or would look in his direction...nor do I really think he would want too move. But, I do think he might have been a "help" in the interviewing process if he was interested in helping.
