MSU is making a strong push towards FBS and it seems like they are willing to sacrifice other sports to get there. if they do leave, it could create the end of the MVC as we know it. what would be our expansion candidates?? belmont, oral roberts, valpo, umkc, the dakotas, NMSU, detroit, milwaukee, etc. most of those adds aren't bad but they aren't good either.

If MSU goes FBS i could see Ilsu following them and of course you got the big dog WSU wanting to get out because of the MVC "east expansion".

This is all scary to me because i don't know where we fit in in any scenario. do we go FBS? are we attractive enough for the A10 to want us? do we go to the OVC? Horizon?

I am hearing, from a birdie in the know, that JMU will join the MAC.
Found this on the Redbird board, any comments? http://redbirdfan.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6214

Does that make $$$ sense for JMU? They do draw students from the "greater NorthEast corner" of the US of A... but wow, moving up to FBS is an expensive decision, especially not knowing what the future holds with NCAA football... if the BCS conferences break away, there won't be a lot of $$ for the WAC, Mtn West, C-USA, etc, etc to worry about... unless FSN, CBS_SN and NBC's Sports Channel really find the money under some rocks.

BCS football is where the money is and I don't see JMU or Ill State being part of that mix

No. IMHO, none of these conference moves mentioned in this thread make any sense. I don't think ILL. St. actually got an invitation to join the MAC it is their annual wish that it happens.

Nope, it doesn't. Ask UMass. You're also 100% right on the BCS money situation. The folks that make money are in the power conferences. Those in the low level FBS conferences are a wash when you consider the scholarship jump to compete at that level, not to mention increased expenses for coaches, recruiting, travel, etc.

Exactly. Do you think the teams in the Sun Belt are moving the needle economically because they get to fight for the chance to play in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl or the New Orleans Bowl? Please...

Wichita wants out because they have Creighton Envy, SWMS wants out because they are tired of getting their butts handed to them.

We, MVC needs to expand. Add ISUM-the Dakotas, doesn't matter who if at all. Loyal was a big bust......maybe Valpo, don't have far to see the TREES

The MVC needs to pull their heads out of their arses and do whatever is necessary to move St. Louis and Dayton to the MVC. They are a decent geographical fit, and their programs would actually ADD to the MVC, instead of doing nothing for the conference. I don't know that they would leave the A-10, but if the MVC could get them, Wichita would be less likely to search for another conference, and the rest of us wouldn't have to worry so much about making our non-con a killer every year, because we'd get six high quality conference games ever year, rather than the two (or zero) we generally get.

I have absolutely no confidence that the leadership of the MVC, including member schools, have that sort of vision for the conference. Sometimes, it seems that the leadership is more interested in mediocrity rather than getting better. And the member schools seem happy to jettison any program that gets really good so that we can have fairness. Personally, I'm not interested in fairness in the MVC. I'm interested in ISU getting off its ass and becoming a championship level athletic program instead of whining about everyone else's advantages.

And why in the hell Missouri State thinks hopping to the Sun Belt is such a great idea is beyond me. Ten years from now, the Sun Belt and the MVFC are going to be in the same division anyway. That's just several years of losing tons more money than they are now. Yeah, seems smart to me.

I like the odds of the MVFC being around in 10 years over the Sun Belt and the MAC. Just my opinion.

I'll try to answer some of these questions.

1. Missouri State has FBS aspirations. The university has spent 40 million on facility upgrades this off season in phase 1 to be completed in August.

2. The sunbelt has targeted MSU as an expansion candidate for years.

3. The MVC is clearly better at basketball in it's current format than the SBC.

4. Our university president is very irritated with the addition of Loyola. He has campaigned all spring that we made the wrong choice and that we should have taken 3 teams last off season. He was an advocate for Belmont and thought we should have waived the entry fee like they asked us too.

5. I don't believe the BCS will pull away like many think they will. I imagine something more like the top 150 schools forming the new D1. I'm not sure the BCS schools could convince congress to keep them nonprofit if the don't have a larger group.

6. The cost for going FBS is high but the opportunity for university growth increases exponentially.

7. MSU added 2 women's sports and must add men's scholarships within 3 years to remain title IX compliant.

8. I have mixed feelings. I love basketball this move scares me.

9. I think the schools in the MVC are a better match but playing in a league without private schools would be nice.

If the Sun Belt wants to go to 16 for football then Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee would make a lot more sense, unless the SBC is just being petty.
