OK, it was just a rumor that I had any confidence in the Hulman State rumor. I didn't do any homework.

It was real as hell. No rumor. If you can figure out what the hell 4Q was writing about there, let me know. It made more sense to have given it to RPI but we truly had the first shot, and rightfully turned it down.

Agree - though don't tell Bally, he prefers to live in ignorance

I don't believe he prefers to live in ignorance it's just nobody really gives a shit about a list of State schools named after the city they are located .

You're arguing about the "truth of a rumor?"

As I understand your allegation, Dr Ranking refused an unknown amount of $$ and land to relocate and rename ISU at the time of the construction of the Hulman Center (1971-73). -- is that your claim?

I've mentioned that Hulman State rumor to different folks Ive known in the ISU "leadership" over the years, none had EVER heard that rumor.

The "best" time to relocate ISU was when the original campus (one building) burned in 1888. Did the hulmans make a offer then?

By the time the Hulmans gave $$ to RPI in 1917, ISU was too large to move; it was far, FAR too large to move in the 1970s (as you assert)

The Hulmans had AMPLE opportunity to endow ISU over they years -- they haven't, Donald Scott, a NON-Alumnus DID at the tune of... $12.5M? Or was it $15M?

Interesting with all this talk about the Hulmans ............and the place already named for them.............why haven't the Hulmans stepped up with several million dollars toward the Hulman Center renovation ? ? ?
Several things around with their name attached but easily the most prominent would have to be Hulman Center ---- you'd think they would want it to be top-notch.
Or maybe various forces within ISU/Terre Haute don't want the Hulmans involved ? ? ?
Hummmmm ....................? ? ?

Perhaps it's because Tony Hulman, Jr. got a pretty big inheritance from his father; he had a sister and brother, the sister died as a child, I don't believe his brother had any children.

Tony Jr had one child - Mari Hulman George.

Mari has what, 4-5 kids? How many grandchildren? Great-grandchildren??

I'd say, they don't have the $$$ they used to have --- a lot of heirs tend to spread those fortunes out. AND Mari is pretty generous to St Mary's and other charities...

We all know that whether it happened or not is not important. Like anytime else, when someone says it is totally false and it is not totally false, the topic continues. I even commented before when those talks took place, the moment when Dr. Rankin was talking to Tony Sr. about money needed for then proposed University-Civic Center. They were formal enough that the university naming became part of the topic. It WAS discussed by the Board of Turstees but did not even go to committee. I don't really care if you believe it or not. I know what was told to me and when and by whom and that is all I need to know. Bottom line, the right decision was made and it was never seriously considered.

You mean when Dr. Rankin spoke with Tony Jr. ... right?

Tony SR died in 1942 ...

Alan Rankin was teaching at Miami (OH) Univ... perhaps he was at Cornell by 1942... where he was NOT was Terre Haute, Indiana.

Because I am getting tired of this ridiculous discussion, I am going to cut it off here. For your information, 4Q, unless you make another flawed statement.

This statement is taken directly out of Wikipedia.Anton "Tony" Hulman, Jr. (February 11, 1901 – October 27, 1977). Tony lived long enough to see his name on Hulman Civic-University Center that opened, I believe in 1973. He knew his health was failing and decided to "spread the wealth" a bit because I don't think he was thrilled with what his daughter's legacy might be. Your facts on the Hulman's were obviously not correct and I figured you would research it and see why but I guess not. I also had met Tony at an ISU function in the mid 70's and I was pretty sure he was alive.

Note: I noticed that I said SR. above but it was obvious that I was talking about Jr.

I just wanted to make sure I understood your claims...

Yes, given the fate of Tony Jr's son-in-law (Elmer George), he very easily could have worried about her legacy. he could have and may have established trusts for his grandchildren, easily by-passing his daughter's whims/goals/desires...

Yes, Tony Jr lived long enough to see HCUC be constructed and open for business.

I've partied with Kathi George; she was quite alive in the late 1980s.

Since it's a quiet friday, I'm curious which "facts were obviously non correct..."?

Enjoy your holiday weekend -- try to remember why and WHO you should thank for it being longer than usual
