Thats a good question, he has been with Yahoo for years.

I have no information but I'd guess he's always been located in Indiana. Just a guess

With all due respect, Indy IS considered to be one of the best sports towns in the country. With the events coming in the next few years, as well as a Super Bowl at some point, it makes sense to me. I have read some of his stuff so I am thrilled to have him. (note, as I have stated before, I generally liked Kravitz as well). Consider it an upgrade.

Kravitz was terrible, any columnist that states he smoked pot in his own article is a POS. He has kids that read his shit, to put that out into the public at an attempt at humor or self righteousness I don't know but I lost any and all respect at that point. Your a professional, act like it - him smoking pot in his day has not relevance on any topic. The end about Kravitz.

Since I am close to his age, I would say that statement was not that unusual for almost anyone with their college years in the 60's. I never read that admission but assuming it was in his past and who gives a crap. If I hadn't gone to Indiana State, it might have been a regular part of my life like it was for most of my east coast friends. Not condoning it at all but I hardly would throw the paper away because of it.

Yeah, make an excuse for him. I will go ahead and stand behind my post and agree to disagree.

I didn't say that I cared if he smoked dope or not, I said it had no place in one of his articles and it left a lasting impression on me as a younger man than I am now.

Don't condone it, will never condone it - write about it in a professional setting, sorry zero respect for that and if you or anyone else has a problem with that I don't really care.

I don't know that it mattered when you grew up, just because back then it was socially acceptable doesn't mean growing up on my youth it wasn't more prevalent. You gotta stand for something as a kid - I hated reading an article about sports to see someone interject that nonsense. That is my point - it mattered to me.

And I for the record, didn't bring Bob up - but since I was in the thread when you commented on him I will glady get my
two cents in.

I appreciate the conversation and I'm not trying to quell it, but I do hope that some of you (and other folks) will email the new columnist to let him know we appreciate ISU coverage in the Star.

Yes, I used the word quell.

Yes, there is so much going on in the sports field to allow 2 good reporters todo a good job. But as long as the Indianapolis Star supports mediocrity it will dontinue to be a joke. Good sports and good sports writers do not necessarily mean a good sports section.

I sent him a comment on Twitter. In his introductory article he was asked IU or PU. Went on to mention them both with ND and Butler... We were in the "and others" catagory of his article...

So I went ahead and let him know we were part of the equation - respectfully :)

No great disrespect towaard Mr. Dayey or you, but I must ask: If he is that great why did he land in Indy?

This is what he said when it was announced:

"I always wanted to do local columns. A lot of people are asking me, 'Why would you leave a national job for a so-called local job?' But I don't look at that way. I look at it as do people care about what I'm writing or not. Indianapolis will be a concentrated marketplace that will care about every single thing I write. If I'm writing about it, my target audience is going to care about it -- every single day."

He worked previously as the national basketball writer for CBS Sports and covered the Miami Marlins for the Miami Herald and the ACC for the Charlotte Observer.

I've always enjoyed Doyel's contributions. However, I am under no illusions that he'll cover Indiana State at all. He's gotta kiss Clappy's and Painter's arses so the IU and Purdue alums are happy. No other coverage will be tolerated. Unless we're doing exceptionally well, in which case, we'll get a nice article and then proceed to lose a bunch of games. That's the way it always works...

Khristian Smith did make the Indy Star College Basketball all Indiana Second Team. In good company on that list. For what its worth, DJ Ballentine was on the third team and Gant and James Blackmon were Honorable Mention...

I received this from Greg Doyel this AM. At least he answered.

Thank you Ron. This is all duly noted. I hope to make you happy.

I enjoyed your first column in the Indy Star this morning. I have subscribed to the Star for over 40 years but have a few observations:

1. 3 or 4 pages almost exclusively dedicated to the NFL is overkill.
2. IU, Purdue, and Notre Dame are not the only college athletic programs in Indiana. As a graduate of Indiana State University I feel that the Star has neglected coverage of our athletic teams in what appears to be an intentional manner. ISU versus North Dakota State, the #1 ranked team in FCS, receives 10 lines on page 9 after UIndy, Franklin, and Butler. Nothing said about NDSU 30 game streak and ISU being the last team to beat them. I realize that The Big 3 are going to get the lion’s share of the coverage but this is ridiculous.
3. High School coverage in the Star has been neglected to the point that only recruiting and the “donut counties” are ever even mentioned.

I realize that these things are probably outside of your control but maybe a mention in your column occasionally regarding Indiana State and good high school teams outside of the “donut counties” would help. There was a time when the Indianapolis Star considered itself the “state’s newspaper, but apparently no longer does.

I JUST got a response too...

"Thanks matt. I’ve received a few votes for ISU coverage. Noted!!!!!"

Yes, my name is Matt.

Shared this article and quote, and my subsequent thought about Ben Bradlee's death and newspapers on Facebook last night. I think my analogy suits newspapers quite well, including large newspapers trying to cover sports.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/...ept-his-social-throne-almost-to-end/16429447/

"It really is the end of an era. If Bradlee was no longer recognizable, neither are the newspaper, city and society he dominated for so long."

That era has been over for quite a while. Many newspapers are society's dementia patients these days. Driven by fuzzy memories of what they once were and would still like to be.
