I am moving to Kokomo, Indiana in a couple weeks. The reason for the move is I am getting a new job. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good/safe, affordable apartment complexes in Kokomo, Indiana. If someone can tell me what part of Kokomo is considered the “bad” part of town?(street locations) So I know to stay out of those areas.
Thanks,
SR

Nice complex on SR 26 west of US 31 south of Kokomo, but it depends on where your job is. Generally outlying areas are better but still near town.

Feel sorry for you, Kokomo is abysmal! I hope it is a very good job.

Actually, Kokomo has cleaned up quite a bit from what it was say 30 years ago. It was a very rough town with tons of prostitution. Kokomo basically lives and dies with the manufacturing industry, way too reliant on this segment of the economy. Like Syc70 said stay in the out ward edges of town and away from downtown.

Worked in Kokomo for 3 years. I liked Kokomo, the people are great. Lots of shopping and activities go on in Kokomo. I worked for Ivy Tech. I can't speak to any apartment complexes, as I live in Westfield and drove everyday. I would however suggest that you avoid 31 at all costs. It is horrible!!! There is a stop light every 15 feet and it will take you over an hour during rush hour to get from 1 end to the other of Kokomo. Since you are going to IU-K, I suggest finding something on the westside of 31, that way you avoid it completely.

I would also suggest that you look at renting a house. For the price of an apartment you can rent a pretty nice house in Kokomo. You would have to mow the grass and have a little extra work, but you would be better off.

As for IU-K, that is a strange place to me. They are trying soooo hard to be a "real" university. They now have athletics, they are talking about dorms, etc. Its pretty nice and now that they got rid of that Chancellor that was nuts (literally I met the guy a few times), things are probably looking up. I think you will like it there. As I said the people in Kokomo are great! Lots of great little places to eat. I would say it is similar to Terre Haute, just cleaner (in my opinion). Good luck...but avoid 31...no matter what. If you can find a place that gets you to IU-K without ever having to go near 31, do it! You will be thankful!

And to think that 31 was actually built as a bypass around downtown Kokomo now they are working on a bypass for the bypass.

Yup, and the businesses in Kokomo are pitching a fit about the bypass for the bypass. They don't seem to realize that they are reason for the bypass of the bypass. Kokomo needs to implement some zoning, and the state needs to make sure that they don't allow continual additions of stoplights everywhere.

Round abouts are the answer, just ask Carmel.

Keystone is the best thing ever! I get from 146th to 96th street in less than 5 minutes. It used to take 20 due to stop lights!
