Sounds like it was a foregone conclusion in reading this and had already been in the works pending their Big Sky exit.

Great! They can take ISU's place.

ISU needs to either drop football altogether or drop down to non-scholarship football and build a 3,000 seat small stadium down by the river...multi-use for soccer.

Seriously, what is it that we're truly hanging onto with ISU FCS football...what do we truly get out of it? Granted the same question can be said with other sports, but with football I think it's a more relevant question at this point.

"Why does ISU sustain the sport at the level it does when few care about it? Should athletic resources be funneled to sports that are better supported or have more national upside, such as men’s basketball or baseball? These are questions worth asking. I’m sure ISU Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales, who’s had his first taste of ISU football this season, is doing just that."

Unless there's a DRAMATIC change in $$$ or alumni, student, fan enthusiasm; I can't see us maintaining the status quo. Football continues to dominate the college landscape (within NCAA Div I circles), any/all conference realignments have been football centered.

North Dakota moving to the Summit and MVFC will a great move for them. It won't hurt either league.

As to us and MVFC... ISU needs to find the $$$ to upgrade the program OR take the hard look at the PFL or shuttering the program entirely.

I don't see this passing, they may very well join the Summit but bring nothing to the mvfc

Honestly, what sports at ISU have a consistent national prominence? What sports are truely supported well?

I understand where you're going with this, but none of those sports have the cost associated with them that football does, either.

While that may be the case, it sounds like a done deal. Don't know if this means they'd try to get a second school to join to keep it even? Maybe this could be the start of a FCS super conference where the MVFC goes to divisions to help lower travel expenses of its members?

Terrible situation in fcs, no true champion and you get what's going on in the Big Sky right now.

Und playing for a share of a conference title but not playing EWU or Montana this year, record is padded with crap teams

We already had that happen in the valley also but not as bad, so adding more and splitting isn't going to help much imo

I tend to see things slightly differently.

Option 1. Maintain things as they are--most likely a terrible idea.

Opting 2. Adding 2 schools to the MVFC and split into 2 divisions. The last game of the season places divisions leaders for top spot. Follow this pattern down in all of the last game schedules for final MVSC placings.

Option 3. Go to a program of non-scholarship football. Well like Butler.

Option 4. A total new start for non P5 schools. Here we renew old rivalries. We keep costs down and still see some very good football. The ICC is renewed. For you youngsters the ICC is the Indiana Collegiate Conference Google it if you need to. Play it with D2 or D3 rules. I actually love this idea.

And while we are changing alliances, let's just tdo all sports this way.

Ain't gonna happen. But I still like it.

Doesn't the conference champion just win the FCS title anyhow?

HELL NO to UND

they bring nothing.

you eastern schools have to fly to Fargo then bus 70 miles up and 70 miles back and fly out.

und admin and fans mocked the mvfc and they have a ton of problems up there

contact your AD/Pres and say NO!!

Dude, they charter planes so FB teams fly right into GF

your thinking of the olympic sports that fly commercial, then yes they fly into Fargo and bus because its cheaper.

Not sure how you continue to avoid multiple long road trips, if we keep adding Dakota schools.
Which is why I think you would have to snag another school (let's say EIU, for example) and split it into two divisions.

MVFC North
Missouri State
North Dakota State
North Dakota
Northern Iowa
South Dakota State
South Dakota

MVFC South

Eastern Illinois
Illinois State
Indiana State
Southern Illinois
Western Illinois
Youngstown State

You'd play the 5 in your conference and then 3 from the opposite conference. I know people don't like this since there is no "championship game" to decide a true winner, but if the goal is to keep football sustainable and ND is a "shoe in" something will have to be done to keep us in the MVFC since we only agreed to South Dakota if we had a minimum number of trips up North.

As usual, reading much of the content is depressing. One would questions if this site really is supportive of ISU and all we stand for.
It's the harsh realities we face. What point does ignoring the problem stop being the recommended course of action? Our attending barely jumping during our success under Miles and Sanford's playoff season.

For example, still no FIRM statement from the school stating they plan on securing football LONG TERM and building a new stadium on campus. If they did that and then started collecting funds that would possibly go a long way as to building some momentum.

When Miles turned around the program 7-8 years ago I was all aboard the ISU football bandwagon. We had good teams, rising attendance, tailgating turned into an event, etc. It was exciting to see where the Sycamores were heading. Now even with a recent playoff appearance and solid teams, there just isn't much life in the program anymore. And with a stadium that is falling apart, i'm finding it harder and harder to see a light at the end of the tunnel for this program. I'm a pro-football guy (still coaching it) and it just seems more apparent that football is holding some of are other sports back at times.

IF we cut football and that money goes into other programs, then it might be something to consider. IF we cut football and we field mediocre to bad programs in basketball and baseball then it would of been a huge mistake. Something needs to change (it could be the hulman center renovation) for ISU athletics.

My Son was pretty excited when he heard the news. I think people would have a better attitude toward football if we had been just a little better this year. We still are going to finish with a better record than most on here predicted. Besides all of that once Saturday's game is over and we have exorcised the demons of this season we will have a clearer perspective. Long live Sycamore Football!
